| 설명 | 큰 창자의 일부분으로 곧창자과 막창자를 연결하는 부위인 오름창자, 가로창자, 내림창자, 구불창자를 지칭하는 말이지만, 큰창자와 동의어로 사용될 경우도 있다. 큰창자는 작은창자에서 소화, 흡수된 것을 받아서 항문까지 보내는 부분이다. 큰창자에서 전해질이나 수용성 비타민 등의 흡수가 일어나기도 하나 작은창자에 비하면 아주 미미한 양이 흡수가 된다. 대신에 많은 양의 수분이 흡수가 되어서 대변의 형성에 기여한다. 그리고 큰창자에는 정상적으로 세균이 있어서 소화, 흡수되고 남은 물질을 분해한다. |

| 설명 | 장이 서로 꼬이는 것을 말함. 심한 복통과 장운동의 감소를 동반한다. 이 때 꼬인 장에서 혈액의 순환이 원활치 않게 되므로 빠른 치료를 시행하지 않으면, 염전이 일어난 부분이 썩게 된다. 치료는 빨리 수술하여 풀어주어야 한다. |
