viral envelope The outer structure that encloses the nucleocapsids of some viruses; may contain host material.
(05 Mar 2000)
viral envelope proteins Layers of protein which surround the capsid in animal viruses with tubular nucleocapsids. The envelope consists of an inner layer of lipids and virus specified proteins also called membrane or matrix proteins. The outer layer consists of one or more types of morphological subunits called peplomers which project from the viral envelope; this layer always consists of glycoproteins.

cistern of nuclear envelope The space between the internal and external membranes of the nuclear envelope; may be continuous in places with cisterns of the endoplasmic reticulum.
Synonym: cistern of nuclear envelope, perinuclear space.
(05 Mar 2000)
corneocyte envelope An electron-dense, 10-15 nm thick layer of highly cross-linked protein on the cytoplasmic surface of the cell membrane of epidermal corneocytes; it is highly resistant to proteolytic agents.
Synonym: subplasmalemmal dense zone.
(05 Mar 2000)
HIV envelope protein gp120 External envelope protein of the human immunodeficiency virus which is encoded by the HIV env gene. It has a molecular weight of 120,000 kD and contains numerous glycosylation sites. Gp120 binds to cells expressing CD4 cell-surface antigens, most notably t4-lymphocytes and monocytes/macrophages. Gp120 has been shown to interfere with the normal function of CD4 and is at least partly responsible for the cytopathic effect of HIV.
(12 Dec 1998)
HIV envelope protein gp160 An envelope protein of the human immunodeficiency virus that is encoded by the HIV env gene. It has a molecular weight of 160,000 kD and contains numerous glycosylation sites. It serves as a precursor for both the HIV envelope protein gp120 and the HIV envelope protein gp41.
(12 Dec 1998)
HIV envelope protein gp41 Transmembrane envelope protein of the human immunodeficiency virus which is encoded by the HIV env gene. It has a molecular weight of 41,000 and is glycosylated. The n-terminal part of gp41 is thought to be involved in cell fusion with the CD4 antigens of t4 lymphocytes, leading to syncytial formation. Gp41 is one of the most common HIV antigens detected by immunoblotting.
(12 Dec 1998)
nuclear envelope <cell biology> Membrane system that surrounds the nucleus of eukaryotic cells. Consists of inner and outer membranes separated by perinuclear space and perforated by nuclear pores. The term should be used in preference to the term nuclear membrane which is potentially very confusing.
(18 Nov 1997)
surface envelope model <biology> A way of treating the hydrodynamics of a ciliary field by considering the whole surface of the ciliate to have an undulating surface. The undulations arise because of metachronism.
(18 Nov 1997)
envelope 1. <virology> Lipoprotein outer layer of some viruses derived from plasma membrane of the host cell.
2. <microbiology> The plasma membrane and cell wall complex of a bacterium.
(11 Nov 1997)
envelope conformation See: Haworth conformational formulas of cyclic sugars.
(05 Mar 2000)
envelope flap A mucoperiosteal flap retracted from a horizontal incision along the free gingival margin.
(05 Mar 2000)
acute viral conjunctivitis An epidemic inflammation of the conjunctiva marked by follicles, especially in the lower fornix; may be caused by adenoviruses, herpesvirus, and Newcastle disease virus.
(05 Mar 2000)
antibodies, viral Immunoglobulins produced as a response to viral antigens; includes all classes of immunoglobulins elicited by all viral components.
(12 Dec 1998)
antigens, viral Substances elaborated by viruses that have antigenic activity.
(12 Dec 1998)
antigens, viral, tumour Those proteins recognised by antibodies from serum of animals bearing tumours induced by viruses; these proteins are presumably coded for by the nucleic acids of the same viruses that caused the neoplastic transformation.
(12 Dec 1998)
avian viral arthritis virus A virus of the genus Reovirus, family Reoviridae, causing tenosynovitis and arthritis in chickens.
