| rostral | Relating to any rostrum or anatomical structure resembling a beak. Synonym: rostralis. Origin: L. Rostralis, fr. Rostrum, beak (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| rostral lamina | A whitish line appearing on perfectly median sections of the brain as a thin bridge connecting the rostrum of the corpus callosum with the lamina terminalis; the rostral lamina contains no commissural fibres; instead, it corresponds to the line along which the pia mater reflects from the medial surface of one hemisphere to that of the other. Synonym: lamina rostralis, rostral layer, teniola corporis callosi. (05 Mar 2000) |
| rostral layer | A whitish line appearing on perfectly median sections of the brain as a thin bridge connecting the rostrum of the corpus callosum with the lamina terminalis; the rostral lamina contains no commissural fibres; instead, it corresponds to the line along which the pia mater reflects from the medial surface of one hemisphere to that of the other. Synonym: lamina rostralis, rostral layer, teniola corporis callosi. (05 Mar 2000) |
| rostral neuropore | The temporary opening at the extreme rostral (cephalic) end of the early embryonic forebrain; closes at the 20th somite stage. Synonym: anterior neuropore, cranial neuropore. (05 Mar 2000) |
| rostral transtentorial herniation | Displacement of anterior cerebellar structures through the incisura, with or without caudorostral brainstem shift. (05 Mar 2000) |
| vestibular nucleus | One of a group of four main nuclei that includes: the lateral vestibular nucleus (Deiters' nucleus), medial vestibular nucleus (Schwalbe's nucleus), superior vestibular nucleus (Bechterew's nucleus), and inferior vestibular nucleus, located in the lateral region of the hindbrain beneath the floor of the rhomboid fossa. They receive primary fibres of the vestibular nerve, are reciprocally connected with the flocculonodular lobe of the cerebellum, and project by way of the medial longitudinal fasciculus to the abducens, trochlear, and oculomotor nuclei and to the ventral horn of the spinal cord. The lateral vestibular nucleus projects to the ipsilateral ventral horn of the spinal cord by the vestibulospinal tract. Synonym: nucleus vestibularis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| medial vestibular nucleus | Nucleus vestibularis medialis. See: vestibular nucleus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| superior vestibular nucleus | One of a group of four main nuclei that includes: the lateral vestibular nucleus (Deiters' nucleus), medial vestibular nucleus (Schwalbe's nucleus), superior vestibular nucleus (Bechterew's nucleus), and inferior vestibular nucleus, located in the lateral region of the hindbrain beneath the floor of the rhomboid fossa. (05 Mar 2000) |
| inferior vestibular nucleus | Nucleus vestibularis inferior. See: vestibular nucleus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral vestibular nucleus | Nucleus vestibularis lateralis. See: vestibular nucleus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| vein of vestibular aqueduct | A small vein accompanying the endolymphatic duct; it drains much of the vestibular portion of the labyrinth and terminates in the inferior petrosal sinus. Synonym: vena aqueductus vestibuli. (05 Mar 2000) |
| vein of vestibular bulb | The vein draining the bulb of the vestibule; a tributary of the internal pudendal vein. Synonym: vena bulbi vestibuli. (05 Mar 2000) |
| vestibular | <anatomy> Pertaining to or toward a vestibule. In dental anatomy, used to refer to the tooth surface directed toward the vestibule of the mouth. Origin: L. Vestibularis (18 Nov 1997) |
| vestibular anus | <anatomy, surgery> A congenital malformation in which the anus is imperforate but the rectum opens into the vagina just above the vulva. (05 Mar 2000) |
| vestibular apparatus | <anatomy> The receptor organ of the vestibular portion of the 8th cranial nerve, consisting of the three saemicircular canals and the otolith, located within the petrous portion of the temporal bone of the skull. (05 Mar 2000) |
