| cervical compression syndrome | <syndrome> Pain, paresthesias, and sometimes weakness in the area of the distribution of one or more cervical roots, due to pressure of a protruded cervical intervertebral disc. Synonym: cervical compression syndrome. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| compression syndrome | Trauma and ischemia of soft tissues, principally skeletal muscle, due to prolonged severe crushing of the tissues, leading to increased permeability of the cell membrane and to the release of potassium, enzymes, and myoglobin from within cells. Ischemic renal dysfunction secondary to hypotension and diminished renal perfusion results in acute tubular necrosis and uraemia. (12 Dec 1998) |
| ulnar nerve compression syndrome | <syndrome> A condition caused by compression or entrapment of the ulnar nerve. It may involve both sensory and motor problems and most often results from compression or entrapment of the ulnar nerve at the elbow (cubital tunnel syndrome). Compression of the nerve may occur during normal activities or as a complication of general anaesthesia. (12 Dec 1998) |

| atlantic part of vertebral artery | <anatomy, artery> Suboccipital part of vertebral artery. See: vertebral artery. (05 Mar 2000) |
| vertebral artery | <anatomy, artery> Paired arteries which supply the muscles of the neck, spinal cord and cerebellum. (27 Sep 1997) |
| vertebral-basilar artery disease | <cardiology> Aortic arch syndrome, also referred to by many as vertebral-basilar artery disease, carotid artery occlusive syndrome and subclavian steal syndrome is characterised by a constellation of signs and symptoms which occur secondary to abnormalities in the major arteries which extend off of the aortic arch. These abnormalities are structural and most often secondary to the effects of atherosclerosis, blood clots, trauma or a congenital abnormality. Symptoms of this condition include various neurologic symptoms, reduction in pulse and changes in blood pressure. (27 Sep 1997) |
| carotid-vertebral artery anastomoses | <radiology> Trigeminal a. (most common variant: 0.1-0.2%), otic a., hypoglossal a., proatlantal intersegmental a., ** posterior communicating a. (PCA), -- normal anastomosis of carotid to BASILAR artery) (12 Dec 1998) |

| groove for vertebral artery | <anatomy, artery> The sulcus on the superior aspect of the posterior arch of the atlas that transmits the vertebral artery medially toward the foramen magnum. Synonym: sulcus arteriae vertebralis, sulcus for vertebral artery. (05 Mar 2000) |
| prevertebral part of vertebral artery | See: vertebral artery. (05 Mar 2000) |

| intracranial part of vertebral artery | See: vertebral artery. (05 Mar 2000) |
| triangle of vertebral artery | <anatomy, artery> Triangular area in the root of the neck bounded laterally by the scalenus anterior and medially by the longus coli muscles; the two muscles meet at the triangle's apex, formed by the anterior (carotid) tubercle of the transverse process of vertebra C6; the vertebral artery arises from the subclavian artery at the base of the triangle, bisecting the triangle as it ascends to the apex to enter the transverse foramen of vertebra C6.
