aspect 1. The act of looking; vision; gaze; glance. "The basilisk killeth by aspect." "His aspect was bent on the ground." (Sir W. Scott)
2. Look, or particular appearance of the face; countenance; mien; air. "Serious in aspect." "[Craggs] with aspect open shall erect his head." (Pope)
3. Appearance to the eye or the mind; look; view. "The aspect of affairs." "The true aspect of a world lying in its rubbish." (T. Burnet)
4. Position or situation with regard to seeing; that position which enables one to look in a particular direction; position in relation to the points of the compass; as, a house has a southern aspect, that is, a position which faces the south.
5. Prospect; outlook. "This town affords a good aspect toward the hill from whence we descended." (Evelyn)
6. <astronomy> The situation of planets or stars with respect to one another, or the angle formed by the rays of light proceeding from them and meeting at the eye; the joint look of planets or stars upon each other or upon the earth.
The aspects which two planets can assume are five; sextile, when the planets are 60 deg apart; quartile, or quadrate, when their distance is 90 deg or the quarter of a circle; trine, when the distance is 120 deg; opposition, when the distance is 180 deg, or half a circle; and conjunction, when they are in the same degree. Astrology taught that the aspects of the planets exerted an influence on human affairs, in some situations for good and in others for evil.
7. <astronomy> The influence of the stars for good or evil; as, an ill aspect. "The astrologers call the evil influences of the stars evil aspects.
<geometry>" Aspect of a plane, the direction of the plane.
Origin: L. Aspectus, fr. Aspicere, aspectum, to look at; ad + spicere, specere, to look, akin to E. Spy.

aspect ratio <radiobiology> In toroidal geometry, the ratio of the major diameter (total width of the torus) to the minor diameter (width of a slice taken through one side of the ring). In inertial-confinement fusion, aspect ratio refers to the ratio of a fuel pellet's radius to its wall thickness.
(09 Oct 1997)
low aspect ratio <physics> An aspect ratio for a torus that is small (minor radius is almost as big as major radius).
There are many fusion devices which are designed to have a low aspect ratio. Such devices look more like tractor tires than bicycle tires, as toruses go. There are reasons to believe that low aspect ratio devices will offer some advantages for a fusion reactor. Usually, ease of theoretical and/or numerical analysis is not one of these advantages.

ventral 1. Pertaining to the belly or to any venter.
2. Denoting a position more toward the belly surface than some other object of reference, same as anterior in human anatomy.
Origin: L. Ventralis
(18 Nov 1997)
ventral anterior nucleus of thalamus The most rostral of the subdivisions of the ventral nucleus, receiving projections from the globus pallidus and projecting to the premotor and frontal cortex.
Synonym: nucleus ventralis anterior thalami.
(05 Mar 2000)
ventral aortas The paired vessels ventral to the pharynx, which give rise to the aortic arches.
(05 Mar 2000)
ventral border The ventral or most forward margin of a structure.
Synonym: anterior margin, ventral border.
(05 Mar 2000)
ventral branch Rami ventralis
See: ventral primary rami of cervical spinal nerves, ventral primary rami of lumbar spinal nerves, ventral primary rami of sacral spinal nerves, ventral primary ramus of spinal nerve.
(05 Mar 2000)
ventral decubitus Pressure sores (decubitus ulceration) occurring in ventral locations, such as the abdominal wall or the anterior surface of an extremity.
(05 Mar 2000)
ventral glands <entomology> Insect structures that originate from the ectoderm of the ventrocaudal part of the head and serve as a source of ecdysone.
Synonym: peritracheal glands, prothoracic glands, thoracic glands, ventral glands.
(05 Mar 2000)
ventral hernia An abdominal incisional hernia.
(05 Mar 2000)
ventral horn The anterior or frontal division of the lateral ventricle of the brain, extending forward from Monro's interventricular foramen.
See: lateral ventricle.
(05 Mar 2000)
ventral intermediate nucleus of thalamus The composite middle third of the ventral nucleus receiving in its various parts distinctive projections from the contralateral half of the cerebellum (by way of the superior cerebellar peduncle) and the ipsilateral globus pallidus; nearly all parts of the nucleus projects to the motor cortex.
Synonym: nucleus ventralis intermedius thalami, nucleus ventralis lateralis, ventral lateral nucleus of thalamus.
(05 Mar 2000)
ventral lateral nucleus of thalamus The composite middle third of the ventral nucleus receiving in its various parts distinctive projections from the contralateral half of the cerebellum (by way of the superior cerebellar peduncle) and the ipsilateral globus pallidus; nearly all parts of the nucleus projects to the motor cortex.
Synonym: nucleus ventralis intermedius thalami, nucleus ventralis lateralis, ventral lateral nucleus of thalamus.
(05 Mar 2000)
ventral mesogastrium The primitive midline mesentery extending between future stomach and proximal duodenum and the anterior abdominal wall superior to the umbilicus (umbilical vein). The liver develops within it, and consequently the lesser omentum, coronary and falciform ligaments are derivatives of it. The umbilical vein runs in its caudal free edge, becoming the postnatal round ligament of the liver.
