| 설명 | 자율신경계는 활동하고 있으나 수의운동이 전혀 불능한 상태를 말한다. 따라서 호흡, 심박은 지속하고 있으나 의식적인 활동을 일으키는 일은 할 수 없다. 원인은 두부외상-척추손상-뇌혈관손상-뇌척수종양-중독 등 여러 가지가 있지만, 가장 많은 것은 교통사고 등에 의한 머리외상이다. 대뇌의 표층부는 대뇌겉질이라 하는데, 이 곳에는 백 수 십억의 신경세포가 모여 있어서 운동-감각-의식 등의 작용을 담당하고 있다. 이 대뇌겉질의 손상을 입으면 운동기능이나 의식이 정지되고, 뇌줄기가 담당하는 호흡기능-소화기능-심장박동기능 밖에 하지 못하게 된다. |

The patient does not require respiratory support or circulatory assistance for survival and is in a state of chronic wakefulness without awareness which may be accompanied by spontaneous eye opening, grunts or screams, brief smiles, sporadic movement of facial muscles and limbs.
