| uric acid | <biochemistry> The final product of nitrogenous excretion in animals that require to conserve water, such as terrestrial insects or have limited storage space, such as birds and their eggs. Uric acid has very low water solubility and crystals may be deposited in, for example: butterflies wings to impart irridescence. Uric acid, a crystalline body, present in small quantity in the urine of man and most mammals. Combined in the form of urate of ammonia, it is the chief constituent of the urine of birds and reptiles, forming the white part. Traces of it are also found in the various organs of the body. It is likewise a common constituent, either as the free acid or as a urate, of urinary or renal calculi and of the so-called gouty concretions. From acid urines, uric acid is frequently deposited, on standing in a cool place, in the form of a reddish yellow sediment, nearly always crystalline. Chemically, it is composed of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen, and by decomposition yields urea, among other products. It can be made synthetically by heating together urea and glycocoll. | reflux nephropathy | <nephrology> A condition where the chronic backup of urine into a kidney results in kidney damage. Urine is forced out of the bladder and back toward kidney. This condition occurs most commonly in children who have congenital abnormalities of the urinary tract. Symptoms include back pain, flank, pain, abdominal pain, urinary frequency or urgency and blood in the urine. Other symptoms include nausea, fever and chills, most often indicating a kidney infection has occurred. Diagnosis is frequently confirmed by voiding cystourethrogram. | membranous nephropathy | <pathology> A kidney disease that occurs due to inflammation of the kidney glomerulus and its basement membrane. The exact cause is unknown but it appears to be related to the deposition of immune complexes in the basement membrane leading to thickening of the capillary walls. This disorder is a common cause of nephrotic syndrome an is usually how the disease manifests. Risk factors include primary renal disease, malaria, hepatitis B, lupus, syphilis, cancers and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. Risks also include exposure to some medications such as gold compounds and penicillamine. Mercury, trimethadione and some skin-lightening creams have also been implicated. | IgA nephropathy | <nephrology, pathology> This is a form of glomerulonephritis that results from the deposition of circulating IgA antibody in the kidney tissues. Inflammation of the glomerulus (glomerulonephritis) is the result. This condition may present as acute glomerulonephritis, chronic glomerulonephritis or rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis. Berger's is usually detected in an individual with one or two bouts of bloody urine (usually begins during or soon after a respiratory infection) and no other symptoms of renal disease.
