| transverse myelitis | An inflammatory process involving both gray and white matter of spinal cord. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|
| acute transverse myelitis | Acute inflammation and softening of the spinal cord; involves the entire thickness of the spinal cord but of limited longitudinal extent; multiple aetiologies. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| myelitis, transverse | Myelitis in which the functional effect of the lesions spans the width of the entire cord at a given level. (12 Dec 1998) |
| acute necrotizing myelitis | A spinal cord disorder, probably a demyelinating disease, which affects persons of all ages and either sex. Presents with abrupt or more gradual onset with sensory abnormalities and upper motor neuron weakness; soon a reflexic flaccid motor paralysis and sphincter paralysis supervenes, which is permanent. In some, but not all cases, bilateral or unilateral optic neuritis is associated. In the cerebrospinal fluid, the protein is increased, and mononuclear cells are present. After autopsy, the lesion has been identified as a necrotizing haemorrhagic leukomyelitis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ascending myelitis | Progressive inflammation involving successively higher areas of the spinal cord. (05 Mar 2000) |
| bulbar myelitis | Inflammation of the medulla oblongata. (05 Mar 2000) |
| radiation myelitis | Damage to the spinal cord from exposure to X-rays or other high energy radiation; usually radiation myelitis. Synonym: radiation myelitis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| concussion myelitis | Traumatic myelopathy. (05 Mar 2000) |
| myelitis | <pathology> An infection of the bone marrow. An inflammation or infectionof the spinal cord. (09 Oct 1997) |
| postinfectious myelitis | Spinal cord inflammation that follows a viral infection, usually one of the exanthemas. (05 Mar 2000) |
| postvaccinal myelitis | Spinal cord inflammation that follows vaccination. (05 Mar 2000) |
| subacute necrotizing myelitis | A disorder of the lower spinal cord in adult males resulting in progressive paraplegia. Synonym: angiodysgenetic myelomalacia, Foix-Alajouanine myelitis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| demyelinated myelitis | Acute multiple sclerosis presenting as a myelitis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| systemic myelitis | Inflammation confined to special tracts of the spinal cord. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Foix-Alajouanine myelitis | A disorder of the lower spinal cord in adult males resulting in progressive paraplegia. Synonym: angiodysgenetic myelomalacia, Foix-Alajouanine myelitis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| funicular myelitis | Inflammation involving any of the columns of the spinal cord. Synonym: subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord. (05 Mar 2000) |
| transverse myelitis |
A medical condition in which nerves in the spinal cord become inflamed and lose the ability to send messages. It can be caused by a virus, and affects the insulating layer of material, called myelin, that covers some of the nerve cells and helps them to send messages. Transverse myelitis can cause paralysis, rather like a traumatic spinal cord injury.

| transverse myelitis |
The sudden onset of spinal cord disease. Symptoms include general back pain followed by weakness in the feet and legs that moves upward. There is no cure and many patients are left with permanent disabilities or paralysis. Transverse Myelitis is a demyelinating disorder that may be associated with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Also see demyelinating disorders.

| transverse myelitis |
An acute attack of inflammatory demyelination that involves both sides of the spinal cord. The spinal cord loses its ability to transmit nerve impulses up and down. Paralysis and numbness are experienced in the legs and trunk below the level of the inflammation.

| transverse myelitis |
Inflammation of the spinal cord, which damages the myelin covering, which causes a complete or an incomplete paraylsis.

| transverse myelitis |
an acute spinal cord disorder causing sudden low back pain and muscle weakness and abnormal sensory sensations in the lower extremities. Transverse myelitis often remits spontaneously; however, severe or long-lasting cases may lead to permanent disability.
