| tibial arteries | The anterior and posterior arteries created at the bifurcation of the popliteal artery. The anterior tibial artery begins at the lower border of the popliteus muscle and lies along the tibia at the distal part of the leg to surface superficially anterior to the ankle joint. Its branches are distributed throughout the leg, ankle, and foot. The posterior tibial artery begins at the lower border of the popliteus muscle, lies behind the tibia in the lower part of its course, and is found situated between the medial malleolus and the medial process of the calcaneal tuberosity. Its branches are distributed throughout the leg and foot. (12 Dec 1998) |

| anterior tibial artery | <anatomy, artery> Origin, popliteal; branches, posterior and anterior tibial recurrent, lateral and medial anterior malleolar, dorsalis pedis, lateral tarsal, medial tarsal, arcuate, dorsal metatarsal, and dorsal digital. Synonym: arteria tibialis anterior. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| anterior tibial bursa | <anatomy> The small bursa between the medial surface of the medial cuneiform bone and the tendon of the tibialis anterior. Synonym: bursa subtendinea musculi tibialis anterioris, anterior tibial bursa. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterior tibial compartment syndrome | <syndrome> Ischemic necrosis of the muscles of the anterior tibial compartment of the leg, presumed due to compression of arteries by swollen muscles following unaccustomed exertion. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterior tibial lymph node | A small inconstant lymph node in front of the interosseous membrane along the upper part of the anterior tibial vessels. Synonym: nodus tibialis anterior, anterior tibial node. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterior tibial muscle | <anatomy, muscle> Origin, upper two-thirds of lateral surface of tibia, interosseous membrane, and intermuscular septum; insertion, medial cuneiform and base of first metatarsal; action, dorsiflexion and inversion of foot; nerve supply, deep peroneal. Synonym: musculus tibialis anterior, anterior tibial muscle, musculus tibialis anticus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterior tibial nerve | <anatomy, nerve> One of the terminal branches of the common peroneal nerve, arising at the fibular neck and passing into the anterior compartment of the leg; it supplies the tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus, extensor digitorum longus, and peroneus tertius muscles in the leg, then crosses the ankle joint to supply the muscles on the dorsum of the foot (extensors hallucis and digitorum brevis) becoming cutaneous to innervate adjacent sides of the great and second toes. Synonym: nervus fibularis profundus, nervus peroneus profundus, anterior tibial nerve, deep fibular nerve. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterior tibial node | A small inconstant lymph node in front of the interosseous membrane along the upper part of the anterior tibial vessels. Synonym: nodus tibialis anterior, anterior tibial node. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterior tibial recurrent artery | <anatomy, artery> A branch of the anterior tibial artery which ascends to supply the front and sides of the knee joint, thus contributing to the articular network of the knee. Synonym: arteria recurrens tibialis anterior. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterior tibial veins | The venae comitantes of the anterior tibial artery which empty into the popliteal vein. Synonym: venae tibiales anteriores. (05 Mar 2000) |
| medial calcaneal branches of tibial nerve | <anatomy, nerve> Cutaneous branches of tibial nerve distributed to the inferior and medial heel. Synonym: rami calcanei mediales nervi tibialis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| menisci, tibial | Crescent-shaped disks of fibrocartilage attached to the superior articular surface of the tibia. (12 Dec 1998) |
| posterior tibial artery | <anatomy, artery> The larger and more directly continuous of the two terminal branches of the popliteal; branches, peroneal, nutrient of fibula, lateral and medial posterior malleolar, nutrient of tibia, medial and lateral plantar. Synonym: arteria tibialis posterior. (05 Mar 2000) |
| posterior tibial lymph node | A small inconstant lymph node located along the course of the posterior tibial artery. Synonym: nodus tibialis posterior, posterior tibial node. (05 Mar 2000) |
| posterior tibial muscle | <anatomy, muscle> Origin, soleal line and posterior surface of tibia, the head and shaft of the fibula between the medial crest and interosseous border, and the posterior surface of interosseous membrane; insertion, navicular, three cuneiform, cuboid, and second, third, and fourth metatarsal bones; action, plantar flexion and inversion of foot; nerve supply, tibial. Synonym: musculus tibialis posterior, musculus tibialis posticus, posterior tibial muscle. (05 Mar 2000) |
| posterior tibial node | A small inconstant lymph node located along the course of the posterior tibial artery. Synonym: nodus tibialis posterior, posterior tibial node. (05 Mar 2000) |
