| ansa cervicalis | A loop in the cervical plexus consisting of fibres from the first three cervical nerves. Fibres from a loop between the C-1 and C-2 spinal nerves accompany the hypoglossal nerve for a short distance, leaving it as the superior root of the ansa cervicalis. Fibres from a loop between the C-2 and C-3 spinal nerves form the inferior root of the ansa cervicalis. Most commonly, the roots merge, forming the ansa cervicalis, which gives rise to branches innervating infrahyoid muscles. Synonym: cervical loop, loop of hypoglossal nerve. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| superior root of ansa cervicalis | The fibres that arise from the first and second cervical nerves, accompany the hypoglossal nerve, then branch off to meet the inferior root in the ansa cervicalis; they innervate the infrahyoid muscles. Synonym: descendens hypoglossi, descending branch of hypoglossal nerve, radix superior ansae cervicalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| inferior root of ansa cervicalis | Fibres from the second and third cervical nerves that pass forward and downward along the internal jugular vein; they contribute to the ansa cervicalis and innervate the infrahyoid muscles. Synonym: descendens cervicalis, radix inferior ansae cervicalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| median thyrohyoid ligament | <anatomy> The central thickened portion of the thyrohyoid membrane. Synonym: ligamentum thyrohyoideum medianum, ligamentum hyothyroideum medium. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nerve to thyrohyoid muscle | <anatomy> The thyrohyoid branch, contains fibres of the first and second cervical nerves that have accompanied the hypoglossal nerve to the suprahyoid region, then branch from it to reach the thyrohyoid muscle. Synonym: ramus thyrohyoideus ansae cervicalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| thyrohyoid | <anatomy> Of or pertaining to the thyroid cartilage of the larynx and the hyoid arch. Source: Websters Dictionary (01 Mar 1998) |
| thyrohyoid membrane | A thin, fibrous, membranous sheet filling the gap between the hyoid bone and the thyroid cartilage. Synonym: membrana thyrohyoidea, membrana hyothyroidea. (05 Mar 2000) |
| thyrohyoid muscle | <anatomy> Apparently a continuation of the sternothyroid; origin, oblique line of thyroid cartilage; insertion, body of hyoid bone; action, approximates hyoid bone to the larynx; nerve supply, upper cervical spinal nerves carried by hypoglossal. Synonym: musculus thyrohyoideus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral thyrohyoid ligament | <anatomy> Thickened elastic bundle connecting the superior horn of the thyroid cartilage to the tip of the greater horn of the hyoid cartilage; forms the posterior border of the thyrohyoid membrane. Synonym: ligamentum thyrohyoideum laterale, Berry's ligaments, ligamentum hyothyroideum laterale. (05 Mar 2000) |
| apical branch of inferior lobar branch of right pulmonary artery | <anatomy, artery> Branch (of the inferior lobar branch) of the right pulmonary artery serving the apical segment of the inferior lobe of the right lung. Synonym: ramus apicalis lobi inferioris arteriae pulmonalis dextrae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| communicating branch of glossopharyngeal nerve with auricular branch of vagus nerve | <anatomy, nerve> A small branch of the glossopharyngeal nerve which joins the auricular branch of the vagus, conveying tactile fibres. Synonym: ramus communicans cum nervo glossopharyngeo, ramus communicans nervi glossopharyngei cum ramo auriculari nervi vagalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| communicating branch of otic ganglion with meningeal branch of mandibular nerve | <anatomy, nerve> A branch of otic ganglion to the meningeal branch of mandibular nerve conveying postsynaptic parasympathetic fibres which run back to the main stem of the mandibular nerve for distribution to the parotid gland via the auriculotemporal nerve. Synonym: ramus communicans ganglii otici cum ramo meningeo nervi mandibularis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| posterior branch of right branch of portal vein | <anatomy, vein> Posterior segmental branch of portal vein; branch to posterior segments of right lobe of liver. Synonym: ramus posterior rami dextri venae portae hepatis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| superior lingular branch of lingular branch of superior lobar left pulmonary artery | <anatomy, artery> Branch (of the lingular branch) of the left pulmonary artery serving the superior lingular segment of the superior lobe of the left lung. Synonym: ramus lingularis superior. (05 Mar 2000) |
| inferior lingular branch of lingular branch of left pulmonary artery | <anatomy, artery> Branch (of the lingular branch) of the left pulmonary artery serving the inferior lingular segment of the superior lobe of the left lung. Synonym: ramus lingularis inferior. (05 Mar 2000) |
