a suborder of ciliate protozoa (order Hymenostomatida, subclass Hymenostomatia), characterized by the presence of uniform ciliation, three oral membranelles on the left and an undulating or paroral membrane on the right, and mucocysts. Most are free-living in fresh water, but a few species are symbiotic, mainly in invertebrates. Tetrahymena is a representative genus.
