| hypothyroidism | <endocrinology> A deficiency of thyroid activity. If untreated, it progresses to full blown myxoedema. In infants, severe hypothyroidism leads to cretinism. In juveniles, the manifestations are intermediate, with less severe mental and developmental retardation and only mild symptoms of the adult form.
