the moderate use of, or abstinence from, alcoholic beverages. The temperance movement grew in the early 1800s along with other reform movements of the era. Women were at the head of the effort, because excessive drinking by men often caused abusive behavior. By 1856, 13 states either restricted or prohibited the sale of liquor.
