| 설명 | 물체의 온도를 측정하는 기구. 원리는 온도에 의해서 크기가 변하는 물리학적 성질을 가진 물질(예를 들면 수은)을 써서, 어떤 결정된 눈금으로 온도의 계수치를 읽는 것이다. 온도에 따라서 액체의 팽창-수축을 이용한 것 외에 공업방면에서는 측정원리가 다른 여러 온도계가 사용된다. 많은 종류가 있는데 어느 것이나 물체의 물리적 상태가 온도의 변화에 따라 연속적으로 변하는 것을 이용한다. 역학적, 전기적, 복사, 특수온도계가 있다. |

| 설명 | 액체의 자유표면에서 표면을 작게하려고 작용하는 장력. 비누방울이나 액체 속의 기포-물방울 등이 구상이 되는 것은 이 힘이 액면에 작용하기 때문이며, 용기의 가장자리에 액체가 넘쳐 올라간 모양이 되어 쏟아지지 않는 것도 액체 표면에 장력이 작용하기 때문이다. 수면에 떨어뜨린 기름방울이 금방 퍼지는 것은 물의 표면장력이 기름의 표면장력보다 크고, 기름층이 물의 표면장력에 의해 잡아 늘여지기 때문이다. |

The thermometer usually consists of a glass tube of capillary bore, terminating in a bulb, and containing mercury or alcohol, which expanding or contracting according to the temperature to which it is exposed, indicates the degree of heat or cold by the amount of space occupied, as shown by the position of the top of the liquid column on a graduated scale.
