| subarachnoid | <anatomy> The layer of tissue situated or occurring between the arachnoid and the pia mater. (11 Nov 1997) |
|---|---|
| subarachnoid anaesthesia | A form of regional anaesthesia that involves the injection of an anaesthetic into the epidural space (in the spinal canal), at predetermined location along the spine, to produce anaesthesia in all body regions that are supplied by nerves that arise below the anatomic region of the block. Often used for obstetrical procedures. Origin: Gr. Aisthesis = sensation (27 Sep 1997) |
| subarachnoid cavity | The space between the arachnoidea and pia mater, traversed by delicate fibrous trabeculae and filled with cerebrospinal fluid. Since the pia mater immediately adheres to the surface of the brain and spinal cord, the space is greatly widened wherever the brain surface exhibits a deep depression (for example, between the cerebellum and medulla); such widenings are called cisternae. The large blood vessels supplying the brain and spinal cord lie in the subarachnoid space. Synonym: cavum subarachnoideum, subarachnoid cavity. (05 Mar 2000) |
| subarachnoid haemorrhage | <neurology> A acute condition involving sudden haemorrhage into the space between the arachnoid membrane and the pia mater (adjacent to the brain). Often secondary to a head injury or a blood vessel defect known as an aneurysm. The subarachnoid space also contains the cerebrospinal fluid. (11 Nov 1997) |

| ambient cistern | <anatomy, vein> An expansion of the subarachnoid space extending forward between the corpus callosum and the thalamus; it encloses the internal cerebral veins which caudally join to form the vena magna cerebri (Galen's vein). Synonym: ambient cistern, Bichat's canal, Bichat's foramen, cistern of great vein of cerebrum, cisterna ambiens, cisterna superioris, cisterna venae magnae cerebri, superior cistern. (05 Mar 2000) |
| basal cistern | A dilation of the subarachnoid space in front of the pons, where the arachnoid membrane stretches across between the two temporal lobes over the base of the diencephalon. See: interpeduncular fossa. Synonym: cisterna interpeduncularis, basal cistern, cisterna basalis, cisterna cruralis, Tarin's space. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Pecquet's cistern | A dilated sac at the lower end of the thoracic duct into which the intestinal trunk and two lumbar lymphatic trunks open; it occurs inconstantly and when present is located posterior to the aorta on the anterior aspect of the bodies of the first and second lumbar vertebrae. Synonym: ampulla chyli, chyle cistern, chylocyst, Pecquet's cistern, Pecquet's reservoir, receptaculum chyli, receptaculum pecqueti. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cerebellomedullary cistern | The largest of the subarachnoid cisterns between the cerebellum and the medulla oblongata; may be divided into a dorsal cistern located between the cerebellum and dorsal surface of the medulla (cisterna magna) and a lateral cistern located between the cerebellum and the lateral aspect of the medulla. Synonym: cisterna cerebellomedullaris, cisterna magna. (05 Mar 2000) |
| chiasmatic cistern | A dilation of the subarachnoid space below and anterior to the optic chiasm. Synonym: cisterna chiasmatis, cistern of chiasm. (05 Mar 2000) |
| chyle cistern | A dilated sac at the lower end of the thoracic duct into which the intestinal trunk and two lumbar lymphatic trunks open; it occurs inconstantly and when present is located posterior to the aorta on the anterior aspect of the bodies of the first and second lumbar vertebrae. Synonym: ampulla chyli, chyle cistern, chylocyst, Pecquet's cistern, Pecquet's reservoir, receptaculum chyli, receptaculum pecqueti. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cistern | <cell biology> A closed, fluid-filled sac or vesicle found on a Golgi apparatus comprising the dictyosomes. (09 Oct 1997) |
| cistern of chiasm | A dilation of the subarachnoid space below and anterior to the optic chiasm. Synonym: cisterna chiasmatis, cistern of chiasm. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cistern of cytoplasmic reticulum | See: cisterna. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cistern of great cerebral vein | <anatomy, vein> An expansion of the subarachnoid space extending forward between the corpus callosum and the thalamus; it encloses the internal cerebral veins which caudally join to form the vena magna cerebri (Galen's vein). Synonym: ambient cistern, Bichat's canal, Bichat's foramen, cistern of great vein of cerebrum, cisterna ambiens, cisterna superioris, cisterna venae magnae cerebri, superior cistern. (05 Mar 2000) |
| subarachnoid cisternae |
Spaces at the base of the brain where the arachnoid becomes widely separated from the pia, giving rise to large cavities.
