a genus of tropical trees of the family Loganiaceae whose seeds contain strychnine and other toxic alkaloids. S. nux-vo´mica L. has seeds called nux vomica. S. igna´tii has seeds called St. Ignatius' beans. See strychnine poisoning, under poisoning.
