| stria vascularis of cochlea | The stratified epithelium lining the upper part of the ligamentum spirale cochleae; it is penetrated by capillaries and is believed to be the site of production of endolymph. Synonym: stria vascularis ductus cochlearis, psalterial cord, vascular stripe. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|
| stria vascularis | A layer of highly vascular pigmented granular cells on the outer wall of the cochlear duct. (12 Dec 1998) |
|---|---|
| stria vascularis ductus cochlearis | The stratified epithelium lining the upper part of the ligamentum spirale cochleae; it is penetrated by capillaries and is believed to be the site of production of endolymph. Synonym: stria vascularis ductus cochlearis, psalterial cord, vascular stripe. (05 Mar 2000) |
| plica caecalis vascularis | <anatomy> A peritoneal fold that arches over a branch of the ileocolic artery and bounds in front a narrow recess, the superior ileocaecal (or ileocolic) recess. Synonym: plica caecalis vascularis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nervus vascularis | <anatomy, nerve> A small nerve filament that supplies the wall of a blood vessel. Synonym: nervus vascularis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nevus vascularis | <dermatology> Red or purple-coloured vascular skin markings that develop shortly after birth. Most are usually painless and benign and sharply demarcated from surrounding skin, usually located on the head and neck, and grow rapidly. It is caused by proliferation of immature capillary vessels in active stroma, and is usually present at birth or occurs within the first two or three months of life. Some lesions (cavernous haemangioma) will disappear or become harder to see as the child approaches school age. Localised steroid injections have been used successfully to reduce the size of a birthmark but generally they undergo spontaneous regression and involution without scarring and normally require no treatment. (07 Mar 2000) |
| base of cochlea | The enlarged part of the cochlea that is directed posteriorly and medially and lies close to the internal acoustic meatus. Synonym: basis cochleae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| vestibular fissure of cochlea | A fine fissure in the lower part of the first turn of the cochlea, formed by a spiral lamina which projects from the outer wall of the cochlea but does not quite reach the osseous spiral lamina, thus leaving a narrow gap. (05 Mar 2000) |
| central canals of cochlea | Centrally placed channels that convey vessels and nerves to the apical turns of the cochlea. Synonym: canales longitudinales modioli, central canals of cochlea. (05 Mar 2000) |
| membranous cochlea | Spiral tube in the bony canal of the cochlea, lying on its outer wall between the scala vestibuli and scala tympani. (12 Dec 1998) |
| cochlea | The part of the internal ear that is concerned with hearing. It forms the anterior part of the labyrinth, is conical, and is placed almost horizontally anterior to the vestibule. (12 Dec 1998) |
| cupula of cochlea | The domelike apex of the cochlea. Synonym: cupula cochleae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| spiral canal of cochlea | The winding tube of the bony labyrinth which makes two and a half turns about the modiolus of the cochlea; it is divided incompletely into two compartments by a winding shelf of bone, the bony spiral lamina. Synonym: canalis spiralis cochleae, Rosenthal's canal, spiral canal of cochlea. (05 Mar 2000) |
| spiral ganglion of cochlea | An elongated ganglion of bipolar sensory nerve cell bodies on the cochlear part of the vestibulocochlear nerve in the spiral canal of the modiolus; each ganglion cell gives rise to a peripheral process that passes between the layers of the bony spiral lamina to the organ of Corti, and a central axon that enters the hindbrain as a component of the inferior (cochlear) root of the eighth nerve. Synonym: ganglion spirale cochleae, auditory ganglion, cochlear ganglion, Corti's ganglion, spiral cochlear ganglion. (05 Mar 2000) |
| spiral ligament of cochlea | The thickened periosteal lining of the bony cochlea forming the outer wall of the cochlear duct to which the basal lamina attaches. Synonym: crista spiralis, ligamentum spirale cochleae, spiral crest. (05 Mar 2000) |
| fenestra of the cochlea | An opening on the medial wall of the middle ear leading into the cochlea, closed in life by the secondary tympanic membrane. Synonym: cochlear window, fenestra of the cochlea, fenestra rotunda, round window. (05 Mar 2000) |
