stratum compactum
| stratum griseum colliculi superioris | Term applied to any one of the three major layers of gray matter of the superior colliculus that alternate with layers composed chiefly of nerve fibres: 1) the superficial gray layer of superior colliculus, above the largely white layer of the incoming fibres of the optic tract (optic layer); 2) the middle gray layer of superior colliculus, placed between the optic layer and a more deeply located layer of fibres, the stratum lemnisci; 3) the deep gray layer of superior colliculus, between the stratum lemnisci and the central gray substance surrounding the cerebral aqueduct, and containing the large nerve cells from which most of the colliculus descending connections (tectobulbar, tectopontine, and tectospinal tract) originate. Synonym: stratum griseum colliculi superioris, stratum cinereum colliculi superioris. (05 Mar 2000) |

| septum cervicale intermedium | A thin septum composed of glia fibre and leptomeningeal connective tissue in the cervical spinal cord marking the border between the gracile fasciculi and cuneatus of the dorsal funiculus. Synonym: septum cervicale intermedium. (05 Mar 2000) |
| septum intermedium | Old term for the septum of the atrioventricular canal of the embryonic heart formed by the fusion of the dorsal and ventral atrioventricular canal cushions. (05 Mar 2000) |
| indusium griseum | A thin layer of gray matter on the dorsal surface of the corpus callosum in which the medial and lateral longitudinal stria lie embedded. The indusium griseum is a rudimentary component of the hippocampus, continuous caudally around the splenium of the corpus callosum with the fasciolar gyrus, a slender convolution in turn continuous with the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus; rostrally the indusium griseum curves around the genu and rostrum of corpus callosum and extends ventralward to the olfactory trigone as the tenia tecta or rudimentum hippocampi, hidden in the depth of the posterior parolfactory sulcus that marks the anterior border of the subcallosal gyrus or precommissural septum. Synonym: supracallosal gyrus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| intermedium | Origin: NL, neut. Of L. Intermedius intermediate. 1. Intermediate space. 2. An intervening agent or instrument. 3. <anatomy> The bone or cartilage between the radiale and ulnare in the carpus, and between the tibiale and fibulare in the tarsus. It corresponds to the lunar in the carpus, and to a part of the astragalus in the tarsus of man and most mammals. Source: Websters Dictionary (01 Mar 1998) |
| os cuneiforme intermedium | A bone of the distal row of the tarsus; it articulates with the medial and lateral cuneiform, navicular, and second metatarsal bones. Synonym: os cuneiforme intermedium, mesocuneiform, middle cuneiform bone, second cuneiform bone, wedge bone. (05 Mar 2000) |
| os intermedium | One of the proximal row in the carpus between the scaphoid and triquetral; it articulates with the radius, scaphoid, triquetral, hamate, and capitate. Synonym: os lunatum, lunare, os intermedium. (05 Mar 2000) |
| malpighian stratum | The living layer of the epidermis comprising the stratum basale, stratum spinosum, and stratum granulosum. Synonym: malpighian layer, malpighian rete. (05 Mar 2000) |
| stratum | A layer of vegetation used to determine dominant species in a plant community. (09 Oct 1997) |
| stratum aculeatum | An obsolete term for stratum spinosum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| stratum album profundum | A layer of myelinated fibres, the deepest layer of the colliculus superior, delimiting the latter from the central gray substance surrounding the cerebral aqueduct. Synonym: stratum album profundum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| stratum basale | The outermost layer of the endometrium which undergoes only minimal changes during the menstrual cycle. Synonym: basal layer. Synonym: stratum basale epidermidis. (05 Mar 2000) |
