| 설명 | 생체에 필요한 영양소(물 포함)가 결핍된 상태. 인간이 생존하기 위해서는 음식물의 섭취로 보급되는 단백질-지방-탄수화물 등의 산화연소가 필요하다. 그러나 음식물을 섭취하지 않으면 기아에 빠져서 결국은 사망하게 된다. 기아는 만성기아와 급성기아로 분류되는데, 만성기아는 영양실조와 같은 뜻으로 쓰이는 경우가 많다. 영양부족 상태가 장기간 지속되면 한 증세로 기아부종이 나타난다. 또 기아 때문에 조직이나 장기의 세포가 위축되는 기아위축이 일어난다. 지방조직과 근육에는 위축이 빠르고 현저하게 나타나지만, 뇌와 심장에는 느리게 나타나고 그 정도도 가볍다. 한편, 급성기아는 단식 상태를 말한다. 물도 마시지 않으면 약 7일밖에 생존할 수 없지만, 물만이라도 섭취하면 50~60일 간은 생존이 가능하다. |

Occurs after a prolonged low calorie intake. Anything below 900 calories a day is termed a starvation diet. The body responds to starvation by shutting down "non-essential" systems (for example, menstruation ceases), and lanugo (see above) is also common. Eventually, starvation can lead to serious long-term medical problems and death.
