| Acuaria spiralis | A nematode parasite in the proventriculus and oesophagus, and sometimes the intestine, of chickens, turkeys, pheasants, and other birds. Origin: L. Acus, needle; Mod. L. Spiralis, spiral (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| canalis spiralis cochleae | The winding tube of the bony labyrinth which makes two and a half turns about the modiolus of the cochlea; it is divided incompletely into two compartments by a winding shelf of bone, the bony spiral lamina. Synonym: canalis spiralis cochleae, Rosenthal's canal, spiral canal of cochlea. (05 Mar 2000) |
| canalis spiralis modioli | <anatomy> The space in the modiolus in which the spiral ganglion of the cochlear nerve lies. Synonym: canalis spiralis modioli. (05 Mar 2000) |
| valvula spiralis | A series of crescentic folds of mucous membrane in the upper part of the cystic duct, arranged in a somewhat spiral manner. Synonym: plica spiralis ductus cystici, Amussat's valve, Heister's valve, spiral valve of cystic duct, valvula spiralis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| vena spiralis modioli | The vein running a spiral course in the modiolus of the cochlea; it is tributary to both the labyrinthine vein and the vein of the cochlear canaliculus. Synonym: vena spiralis modioli. (05 Mar 2000) |
| membrana spiralis | An alternate term for tympanic wall of cochlear duct, tympanic wall of cochlear duct. (05 Mar 2000) |
| plica spiralis ductus cystici | A series of crescentic folds of mucous membrane in the upper part of the cystic duct, arranged in a somewhat spiral manner. Synonym: plica spiralis ductus cystici, Amussat's valve, Heister's valve, spiral valve of cystic duct, valvula spiralis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| crista spiralis | The thickened periosteal lining of the bony cochlea forming the outer wall of the cochlear duct to which the basal lamina attaches. Synonym: crista spiralis, ligamentum spirale cochleae, spiral crest. (05 Mar 2000) |
| hamulus laminae spiralis | The upper hooklike termination of the bony spiral lamina at the apex of the cochlea. Synonym: hamulus laminae spiralis, hamulus cochleae, hook of spiral lamina. (05 Mar 2000) |
| prominentia spiralis | A projecting portion of the spiral ligament of the cochlea, bounding the lower edge of the stria vascularis and containing within it a blood vessel, the vas prominens. Synonym: prominentia spiralis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| sulcus spiralis externus | A concavity in the outer wall of the cochlear duct between the prominentia spiralis and the spiral organ. Synonym: sulcus spiralis externus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| sulcus spiralis internus | A concavity in the floor of the cochlear duct formed by the overhanging labium vestibulare. Synonym: sulcus spiralis internus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tractus spiralis foraminosus | Openings in the cochlear area of the bottom of the internal acoustic meatus through which the fibres of the cochlear nerve leave the bony labyrinth to enter the cranial cavity. Synonym: tractus spiralis foraminosus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| trichinella spiralis | <microbiology> Trichinosis is an intestinal and tissue infection of humans and other mammals caused by the nematode Trichinella spiralis. Infection occurs through the consumption of infected meat (usually domestic pork) that carries the encysted larvae of Trichinella spiralis. Common symptoms include: diarrhoea, muscle pains, fever, dehydration and swelling around the eyes. Myocarditis (heart infection), pneumonitis (lung infection) and encephalitis (brain infection) can also occur in advanced cases. (19 Jan 1998) |
| labium limbi tympanicum laminae spiralis | The lower, long periosteal extension of the limbus laminae spiralis osseae that rests on the basilar lamina of the spiral organ (of Corti). Synonym: labium limbi tympanicum laminae spiralis, tympanic lip of limbus of spiral lamina. Labium urethrae, one of the two lateral margins of the external urethral orifice of the female.
