| spina ossis sphenoidalis | A posterior and downward projection from the greater wing of the sphenoid bone on either side, located posterolateral to the foramen spinosum, so-named for its proximity to the sphenoidal spine; gives attachment to the sphenomandibular ligament. Synonym: processus spinosus, spina ossis sphenoidalis, alar spine, angular spine, spina angularis, spinous process. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|
| ala major ossis sphenoidalis | Strong squamous processes extending in a broad superolateral curve from the body of the sphenoid bone. The greater wing presents these suraces (facies): 1) cerebral surface: forms anterior third of the floor of the lateral portions of the middle cranial fossa; 2) temporal surface: forms the deepest portion of the temporal fossa; 3) infratemporal surface, forms the "roof" of the infratemporal fossa; 4) orbital surface: forms posterolateral wall of orbit. The greater wing forms the inferior border of the supraorbital fissure, and is perforated at its root by foramina rotundum ovale, and spinosum and the pterygoid canal. Synonym: ala major ossis sphenoidalis, ala temporalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| ala minor ossis sphenoidalis | One of a bilateral pair of triangular, pointed plates extending laterally from the anterolateral body of the sphenoid bone. Forming the posteriormost portion of the floor of the anterior cranial fossa, their sharp posterior edge forms the sphenoidal ridge separating anterior and middle cranial fossae. The medial end of the lesser wing attaches to the body by means of two pedicles, thus forming the optic canal. The wing itself forms the superior margin of the supraorbital fissure. Synonym: ala minor ossis sphenoidalis, ala orbitalis, Ingrassia's apophysis, Ingrassia's wing. (05 Mar 2000) |
| angulus sphenoidalis ossis parietalis | The anterior inferior angle of the parietal bone. Synonym: angulus sphenoidalis ossis parietalis, sphenoid angle, sphenoidal angle, Welcker's angle. (05 Mar 2000) |
| margo frontalis ossis sphenoidalis | The margin of the greater wing of the sphenoid bon that articulates with the frontal bone. Synonym: margo frontalis ossis sphenoidalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| margo parietalis ossis sphenoidalis | The margin of the greater wing of the sphenoid that articulates with the parietal bone. Synonym: margo parietalis ossis sphenoidalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| margo sphenoidalis ossis temporalis | The part of the border of the squamous part of the temporal bone that articulates with the greater wing of the sphenoid. Synonym: margo sphenoidalis ossis temporalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| margo squamosus ossis sphenoidalis | The margin of the greater wing of the sphenoid bone that articulates with the squamous part of the temporal bone. Synonym: margo squamosus ossis sphenoidalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| corpus ossis sphenoidalis | The central portion of the sphenoid bone from which the greater and lesser wings and the pterygoid processes arise. The sphenoidal sinuses lie within it. Synonym: corpus ossis sphenoidalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| processus vaginalis ossis sphenoidalis | A thin lamina of bone that extends medially under the body of the sphenoid bone from the medial lamina of the pterygoid process; it articulates with the vomer and the palatine bone. Synonym: processus vaginalis ossis sphenoidalis, sheath process of sphenoid bone. (05 Mar 2000) |
| fossa scaphoidea ossis sphenoidalis | A boat-shaped hollow. A longitudinal hollow on the posterior surface of the superior portion (root) of the medial pterygoid plate; it gives origin to the tensor veli palati muscle. Synonym: fossa scaphoidea ossis sphenoidalis, Cruveilhier's fossa, fossa navicularis Cruveilhier, scaphoid fossa of sphenoid bone. Synonym: scapha. (05 Mar 2000) |
| spina nasalis ossis frontalis | A projection from the centre of the nasal part of the frontal bone, which lies between and articulates with the nasal bones and the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid. Synonym: spina nasalis ossis frontalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| apertura sinus sphenoidalis | One of the pair of openings in the body of the sphenoid bone through which the sphenoid sinuses communicate with the sphenoethmoidal recess of the nasal cavity. Synonym: apertura sinus sphenoidalis, sphenoidal sinus aperture. (05 Mar 2000) |
| pars sphenoidalis arteriae cerebralis mediae | pars sphenoidalis arteriae cerebralis mediae |
| crista sphenoidalis | A vertical ridge in the midline of the anterior surface of the sphenoid bone that articulates with the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone. Synonym: crista sphenoidalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| processus sphenoidalis | The posterior and smaller of the two processes at the extremity of the vertical plate of the palatine bone; processus sphenoidalis cartilaginis septi nasi, processus posterior cartilaginis septi nasi. Synonym: processus sphenoidalis, sphenoid process. (05 Mar 2000) |
