a generic name for an anhydride of sorbitol, whose fatty acids are surfactants (s. monolaurate [NF], s. monooleate [NF], s. monopalmitate [NF], s. monostearate [NF], s. sesquioleate [NF], s. trioleate [NF], s. tristearate) used as emulsifiers in pharmaceutical preparations. See also polysorbate. Called also sorbitol anhydride.
