solitary <botany> Of flowers, borne singly, not grouped in an inflorescence.
(09 Oct 1997)
solitary bone cyst A unilocular cyst containing serous fluid and lined with a thin layer of connective tissue, occurring usually in the shaft of a long bone in a child.
Synonym: idiopathic bone cavity, osteocystoma, simple bone cyst, traumatic bone cyst, unicameral bone cyst.
(05 Mar 2000)
solitary bundle A slender, compact fibre bundle extending longitudinally through the dorsolateral region of the medullary tegmentum, surrounded by the nucleus of the solitary tract, below the obex decussating over the central canal, and descending over some distance into the upper cervical segments of the spinal cord. It is composed of primary sensory fibres that enter with the vagus, glossopharyngeal, and facial nerves, and in part convey information from stretch receptors and chemoreceptors in the walls of the cardiovascular, respiratory, and intestinal tracts; in rostral parts of the tract impulses are generated by the receptor cells of the taste buds in the mucosa of the tongue. Its fibres are distributed to the nucleus of the solitary tract.
Synonym: tractus solitarius, fasciculus rotundus, fasciculus solitarius, funiculus solitarius, Gierke's respiratory bundle, Krause's respiratory bundle, round fasciculus, solitary bundle, solitary fasciculus.
(05 Mar 2000)
solitary echogenic liver mass <radiology> Haemangioma, focal fatty infiltration, hepatoma, adenoma, focal nodular hyperplasia, hepatic lipoma
(12 Dec 1998)
solitary fasciculus A slender, compact fibre bundle extending longitudinally through the dorsolateral region of the medullary tegmentum, surrounded by the nucleus of the solitary tract, below the obex decussating over the central canal, and descending over some distance into the upper cervical segments of the spinal cord.
(05 Mar 2000)
solitary fibrous tumour A benign tumour of fibrous tissue which usually arises in the pleural space on other sites.
Synonym: benign mesothelioma.
(05 Mar 2000)
solitary follicles Minute collections of lymphoid tissue in the mucosa of the small and large intestines, being especially numerous in the caecum and appendix.
Synonym: folliculi lymphatici solitarii, solitary follicles, solitary glands, solitary nodules of intestine.
(05 Mar 2000)
solitary foramen A foramen in the internal acoustic meatus, posterior to the cochlear area, that transmits the nerves to the ampulla of the posterior saemicircular duct.
Synonym: foramen singulare.
(05 Mar 2000)
solitary glands Minute collections of lymphoid tissue in the mucosa of the small and large intestines, being especially numerous in the caecum and appendix.
Synonym: folliculi lymphatici solitarii, solitary follicles, solitary glands, solitary nodules of intestine.
(05 Mar 2000)
solitary lymphatic follicles Minute collections of lymphoid tissue in the mucosa of the small and large intestines, being especially numerous in the caecum and appendix.
Synonym: folliculi lymphatici solitarii, solitary follicles, solitary glands, solitary nodules of intestine.
(05 Mar 2000)
solitary nodules of intestine Minute collections of lymphoid tissue in the mucosa of the small and large intestines, being especially numerous in the caecum and appendix.
Synonym: folliculi lymphatici solitarii, solitary follicles, solitary glands, solitary nodules of intestine.
(05 Mar 2000)
solitary nucleus Gray matter located in the dorsomedial part of the medulla oblongata associated with the solitary tract. The solitary nucleus receives inputs from most organ systems including the terminations of the facial, glossopharyngeal, and vagus nerves. It is a major coordinator of autonomic nervous system regulation of cardiovascular, respiratory, gustatory, gastrointestinal, and chemoreceptive aspects of homeostasis. The solitary nucleus is also notable for the large number of neurotransmitters which are found therein.
(12 Dec 1998)
solitary osteocartilaginous exostosis <oncology, tumour> A benign cartilaginous neoplasm that consists of a pedicle of normal bone with a rim of proliferative cartilage cells, often occurs near the ends of long bones, multiple osteochondromas are inherited and referred to as hereditary multiple exostoses.
(27 Sep 1997)
solitary tract A slender, compact fibre bundle extending longitudinally through the dorsolateral region of the medullary tegmentum, surrounded by the nucleus of the solitary tract, below the obex decussating over the central canal, and descending over some distance into the upper cervical segments of the spinal cord. Synonym: tractus solitarius, fasciculus rotundus, fasciculus solitarius, funiculus solitarius, Gierke's respiratory bundle, Krause's respiratory bundle, round fasciculus, solitary bundle, solitary fasciculus.
(05 Mar 2000)
nucleus of solitary tract A slender cell column extending sagittally through the dorsal part of the medulla oblongata, beneath the floor of the rhomboid fossa, immediately lateral to the limiting sulcus. It is the visceral sensory (visceral afferent) nucleus of the brainstem, receiving the afferent fibres of the vagus, glossopharyngeal, and facial nerves by way of the solitary tract. The caudal two-thirds of the nucleus processes impulses originating in the pharynx, larynx, intestinal and respiratory tracts, and heart and large blood vessels; its rostral one-third receives impulses from the taste buds and is known as the rhombencephalic gustatory nucleus.
Synonym: nucleus tractus solitarii.
