| septum pellucidum | A thin plate of brain tissue, containing nerve cells and numerous nerve fibres, that is stretched like a flat, vertical sheet between the column and body of fornix below, the corpus callosum above and anteriorly; it is usually fused in the median plane with its partner on the opposite side so as to form a thin, median partition between the left and right frontal horn of the lateral ventricles; in less than 10% of humans there is a blind, slitlike, fluid-filled space between the two transparent septa, the cavity of septum pellucidum. The transparent septum is continuous ventralward through the interval between the corpus callosum and the anterior commissure with the precommissural septum and subcallosal gyrus. See: cavity of septum pellucidum, septal area. Synonym: septum pellucidum, septum lucidum. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|
| anterior vein of septum pellucidum | Vein draining the anterior part of the transparent septum; it empties into the superior thalamostriate vein. Synonym: vena septi pellucidi anterior. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| vein of septum pellucidum | See: anterior vein of septum pellucidum, posterior vein of septum pellucidum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cavity of septum pellucidum | A slitlike, fluid-filled space of variable width between the left and right transparent septum, which occurs in less than 10% of human brains and may communicate with the third ventricle. Synonym: cavum septi pellucidi, Duncan's ventricle, fifth ventricle, pseudocele, pseudoventricle, sylvian ventricle, ventricle of Sylvius, ventriculus quintus, Vieussens' ventricle, Wenzel's ventricle. (05 Mar 2000) |
| posterior vein of septum pellucidum | Vein draining the posterior part of the transparent septum; it empties into the superior thalamostriate vein. Synonym: vena septi pellucidi posterior. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lamina of septum pellucidum | One of the two thin layers of the transparent septum, which extend from the corpus callosum to the fornix; often separated from each other by a space, the cavity of septum pellucidum. Synonym: lamina septi pellucidi. (05 Mar 2000) |
| absent nasal septum | <radiology> Cocaine, Wegener's (midline lethal granuloma), surgery, trauma, syphilis, sarcoid (12 Dec 1998) |
| alveolar septum | The tissue intervening between two adjacent pulmonary alveoli; it consists of a close-meshed capillary network covered on both surfaces by very thin alveolar epithelial cells, one of the bony partitions between the tooth sockets. Synonym: septum interalveolare, alveolar septum, septal bone. (05 Mar 2000) |
| aortopulmonary septum | The spiral septum which, during development, separates the truncus arteriosus into a ventral pulmonary trunk and dorsal aorta. See: bulbar ridge. (05 Mar 2000) |
| atrial septum | The wall between the two upper chambers (the right and left atrium) of the heart. (12 Dec 1998) |
| atrioventricular septum | The small part of the membranous septum of the heart just above the septal cusp of the tricuspid valve that separates the right atrium from the left ventricle. Synonym: septum atrioventriculare, pars membranacea septi atriorum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Bigelow's septum | A bony spur springing from the underside of the neck of the femur above and anterior to the lesser trochanter, adding to the strength of this part of the bone. Synonym: Bigelow's septum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| bony nasal septum | The bones supporting the bony part of the nasal septum; these are the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid, the vomer, the sphenoidal rostrum, the crest of the nasal bones, the frontal spine, and the median crest formed by the apposition of the maxillary and palatine bones. Synonym: septum nasi osseum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| bony part of nasal septum | The major portion of the nasal septum supported by the vomer and the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid. Synonym: pars ossea septi nasi. (05 Mar 2000) |
| bulbar septum | An obsolete term for spiral septum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ventricular septum | <anatomy> A muscular wall which separates the left ventricle from the right ventricle. The heart's conduction system travels through the ventricular septum. Damage to the ventricular septum (for example heart attack) can result in cardiac conduction abnormalities. (12 Jan 1998) |
Synonyms : Pellucidum, Septum
| septum pellucidum |
The membrane which separates the laterala ventricles.
