reciprocal 1. Recurring in vicissitude; alternate.
2. Done by each to the other; interchanging or interchanged; given and received; due from each to each; mutual; as, reciprocal love; reciprocal duties. "Let our reciprocal vows be remembered." (Shak)
3. Mutually interchangeable. "These two rules will render a definition reciprocal with the thing defined." (I. Watts)
4. Reflexive; applied to pronouns and verbs, but sometimes limited to such pronouns as express mutual action.
5. <mathematics> Used to denote different kinds of mutual relation; often with reference to the substitution of reciprocals for given quantities. See the Phrases below.
<mathematics> Reciprocal equation, those terms which have the same signification, and, consequently, are convertible, and may be used for each other.
Synonym: Mutual, alternate.
Reciprocal, Mutual. The distinctive idea of mutual is, that the parties unite by interchange in the same act; as, a mutual covenant; mutual affection, etc. The distinctive idea of reciprocal is, that one party acts by way of return or response to something previously done by the other party; as, a reciprocal kindness; reciprocal reproaches, etc. Love is reciprocal when the previous affection of one party has drawn forth the attachment of the other. To make it mutual in the strictest sense, the two parties should have fallen in love at the same time; but as the result is the same, the two words are here used interchangeably. The ebbing and flowing of the tide is a case where the action is reciprocal, but not mutual.
Origin: L. Reciprocus; of unknown origin.
1. That which is reciprocal to another thing. "Corruption is a reciprocal to generation." (Bacon)
2. <mathematics> The quotient arising from dividing unity by any quantity; thus 1/4 is the reciprocal of 4; 1/(a + b) is the reciprocal of a + b. The reciprocal of a fraction is the fraction inverted, or the denominator divided by the numerator.

(01 Mar 1998)
reciprocal anchorage Anchorage in which the movement of one or more teeth is balanced against the movement of one or more opposing teeth.
(05 Mar 2000)
reciprocal arm A clasp arm or other extension used on a removable partial denture to oppose the action of some other part or parts of the appliance.
(05 Mar 2000)
reciprocal beat See: reciprocal rhythm.
(05 Mar 2000)
reciprocal bigeminy Paired beats, each pair consisting of an A-V nodal beat followed by a reciprocal beat.
(05 Mar 2000)
reciprocal forces In dentistry, force's whereby the resistance of one or more teeth is utilised to move one or more opposing teeth.
(05 Mar 2000)
reciprocal inhibition Contraction in a muscle is accompanied by a loss of tone or by relaxation in the antagonistic muscle.
Synonym: reciprocal inhibition.
(05 Mar 2000)
reciprocal innervation Contraction in a muscle is accompanied by a loss of tone or by relaxation in the antagonistic muscle.
Synonym: reciprocal inhibition.
(05 Mar 2000)
reciprocal rhythm A cardiac arrhythmia in which the impulse arising in the A-V junction descends to and activates the ventricles on one intrajunctional pathway and simultaneously ascends toward the atria in parallel pathways; before reaching the atria, however, the impulse is reflected downward and again activates the ventricles, producing an echo or reciprocal beat; recognised in the electrocardiogram by the presence of an inverted P wave in lead aVF and usually II sandwiched between two ventricular complexes aberrantly, both of which may be normal or one of which may be conducted.
(05 Mar 2000)
reciprocal transfusion An attempt to confer immunity by transfusing blood taken from a donor into a receiver suffering from the same affection, the balance being maintained by transfusing an equal amount from the receiver to the donor.
(05 Mar 2000)
reciprocal translocation Translocation without demonstrable loss of genetic material.
(05 Mar 2000)
reciprocal treanslocation Mutual exchange of chromosome segments between two nonhomologous chromosomes (chromosomes that do not belong to the same pair).
(12 Dec 1998)
reversed reciprocal rhythm A cardiac arrhythmia in which a normal sinus impulse, before reaching the ventricles, is reflected backward to the atria; thus in the electrocardiogram a ventricular complex is sandwiched between a normal sinus P wave and a retrograde P wave; if the dysrhythmia continues, subsequent cycles are similar to those of reciprocating rhythm.
(05 Mar 2000)
double-reciprocal plot <statistics> A graph made to analyse how fast an enzyme can convert its substrate into its product, depending on how much substrate is present (its concentration) and to determine its maximum speed (after which the enzyme does not get any faster no matter how high the concentration of substrate gets), called Vmax.
It is a plot of 1/v versus 1/[S], where v=rate of product formation and [S]=the concentration of the substrate.
Synonym: Lineweaver-Burk plot, Woolf-Lineweaver-Burk plot.
(05 Mar 2000)
law of reciprocal proportions The relative weights in which two substances form a chemical union singly with a third are the same as, or simple multiples of, those in which they unite with each other; a corollary of the law of definite proportions.
Synonym: law of multiple proportions.
