| pulmonary alveolar proteinosis | <radiology> Overproduction of surfactant which can lead to alveolar (end-air-space) filling, peak age: 20 - 50 yrs, 33% asymptomatic, treatment: lavage Findings: bat-wing alveolar infiltrate, no interstitial disease, no adenopathy (12 Dec 1998) |
|---|---|
| alveolar proteinosis | A very rare disease in which a phospholipid is widely distributed in cells and accumulates in the alveolar spaces in the lung. In some cases the underlying cause is unknown. In others it may relate to an infection or an immune system dysfunction. The net effect is a progressive interference in the ability of the lung (alveoli) to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. Symptoms include cough, weight loss, fatigue, shortness of breath and nail abnormalities (clubbing). Chest X-ray may show infiltrates, but a bronchoscopy with trans-tracheal biopsy is necessary to make a tissue diagnosis or alveolar proteinosis. Spontaneous remission may occur in some individuals while complete respiratory failure occurs in others. (27 Sep 1997) |
| proteinosis | A state characterised by disordered protein formation and distribution, particularly as manifested by the deposition of abnormal proteins in tissues. Origin: protein + G. -osis, condition (05 Mar 2000) |
| lipoid proteinosis | <disease> A familial disease occurring in the course of latent diabetes, marked by yellowish nodules due to deposits of a protein-lipid complex on the oral tongue and sublingual and faucial areas, translucent keratotic papillomatous eyelid lesions, keratotic lesions on the extremities, and hoarseness. It is due to a disturbance of lipid metabolism with autosomal recessive inheritance and is frequently associated with intracranial calcifications. inheritance: autosomal recessive. Synonym: hyalinasis cutis et mucosae, lipoidosis cutis et mucosae, Urbach-Wiethe disease. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acute pulmonary alveolitis | Acute inflammation involving exudate into the pulmonary alveoli and impaired gas exchange; may result in necrosis with haemorrhage into the lungs; occurs in Goodpasture's syndrome, in association with a glomerulonephritis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acute pulmonary eosinophilia | <chest medicine> A self-limiting inflammation in the lungs where there is associated infiltration of eosinophils into lung tissue. Chest X-ray reveals pulmonary infiltrates and full blood count shows increased numbers of eosinophils. The cause is unknown and the disease often resolves without treatment. Some forms may be treated with oral corticosteroids. Complications include restrictive cardiomyopathy due to fibrosis of the lining of the heart. (27 Sep 1997) |
| adenomatosis, pulmonary | A neoplastic disease in which the alveoli and distal bronchi are filled with mucus and mucus-secreting columnar epithelial cells. It is characterised by abundant, extremely tenacious sputum, chills, fever, cough, dyspnea, and pleuritic pain. (12 Dec 1998) |
| apical branch of inferior lobar branch of right pulmonary artery | <anatomy, artery> Branch (of the inferior lobar branch) of the right pulmonary artery serving the apical segment of the inferior lobe of the right lung. Synonym: ramus apicalis lobi inferioris arteriae pulmonalis dextrae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| apicoposterior branch of left superior pulmonary vein | <anatomy, vein> Drains apicoposterior bronchopulmonary segment of superior lobe of left lung. Synonym: ramus apicoposterior venae pulmonalis sinistrae superioris. (05 Mar 2000) |
| basal part of pulmonary artery | <anatomy, artery> See: right pulmonary artery, left pulmonary artery. (05 Mar 2000) |
| bifurcation of pulmonary trunk | The division of the pulmonary trunk into right and left pulmonary arteries. Synonym: bifurcatio trunci pulmonalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| valve of pulmonary trunk | <anatomy, cardiology> The heart valve that divides the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery. The pulmonic valve opens when the right ventricle contracts allowing blood to flow into the pulmonary artery. The pulmonic valve on closure prohibits the backwash of unoxygenated blood into the right ventricle. The pulmonic valve has 3 valve cusps. (27 Sep 1997) |
| vein, pulmonary | One of four vessels that carry aerated blood from the lungs to the right atrium of the heart. (the four are the right and left superior and inferior pulmonary veins). The pulmonary veins are the only veins that carry bright red oxygenated blood. (12 Dec 1998) |
| medial basal branch of pulmonary artery | <anatomy, artery> A branch of the basal part of inferior lobar branches of the left and right pulmonary arteries. Synonym: ramus basalis medialis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| resistance, pulmonary | The opposition of the respiratory tree to air flow. (12 Dec 1998) |
