a family of bacteria closely related to the actinomycetes, consisting of gram-positive, asporogenous, anaerobic or aerotolerant, branching or regular rods or filaments. The organisms are inhabitants of the skin and respiratory and intestinal tracts, and are sometimes found in soft tissue infections. It includes the genera Eubacterium and Propionibacterium.
