an acute parotitis due to infection (usually with staphylococci) of the parotid gland following a surgical procedure; it is marked by rapid onset, frequently with severe pain and rapid swelling of the glands, and by trismus, low-grade fever, headache, malaise, and leukocytosis. It affects generally debilitated patients, usually middle-aged or older, suffering from dehydration, suppression of salivary secretion, vomiting, or mouth-breathing.
