| plexiform | Weblike, or resembling or forming a plexus. Origin: plexus + L. Forma, form (05 Mar 2000) |

| plexiform layer | molecular layer |
| plexiform layer of cerebral cortex | Layer 1 of the cortex cerebri. Synonym: plexiform layer of cerebral cortex. (05 Mar 2000) |
| plexiform layers of retina | Layer's of the retina where synapses occur; in the external layer, processes of rods and cones synapse with bipolar neuron dendrites; in the internal layer, axon terminals of bipolar cells synapse with ganglion cell dendrites. See: retina. Synonym: stratum plexiforme externum et internum retinae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| neurofibroma, plexiform | A type of neurofibroma representing an anomaly rather than a true neoplasm, in which the proliferation of schwann cells occurs from the inner aspect of the nerve sheath, thereby resulting in an irregularly thickened, distorted, tortuous structure. In some instances the process extends along the course of the nerve and may eventually involve the spinal roots and the spinal cord. (12 Dec 1998) |
| acoustic neuroma | <oncology, tumour> This is a benign tumour of the 8th cranial nerve. This tumour arises from the myelin forming Schwann cells that coat the 8th cranial nerve (acoustic nerve). Clinical presentation usually includes hearing deficit. Diagnosis can be made with auditory evoked potentials and/or MRI scanning of the brain. Vertigo and tinnitus may be associated symptoms. Surgical removal of this tumour involves dissection, cautery and obliteration with laser. Incidence: 1 in 100,000. (13 Nov 1997) |
| amputation neuroma | traumatic neuroma |
| Morton's neuroma | <oncology, tumour> A ganglionic swelling or ganglion cyst in the forefoot. Symptoms include pain in the forefoot and localised swelling. (27 Sep 1997) |
| multiple mucosal neuroma syndrome | <syndrome> Multiple submucosal neuromas or neurofibromas of the tongue, lips, and eyelids in young persons; sometimes associated with tumours of the thyroid or adrenal medulla, or with subcutaneous neurofibromatosis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| neuroma | <oncology, tumour> A benign tumour from nervous tissue. (27 Sep 1997) |
| neuroma, acoustic | A progressively enlarging tumour within the auditory canal arising from the eighth cranial nerve. This solitary form is usually unilateral, tends to develop later in life, and is not inherited as compared to the acoustic neuromas arising in neurofibromatosis 2. (12 Dec 1998) |
| neuroma cutis | Neurofibroma of the skin. (05 Mar 2000) |
| neuroma, optic | A benign tumour of the optic nerve. (12 Dec 1998) |
| neuroma telangiectodes | A neurofibroma with a conspicuous number of blood vessels, some of which have unusually large lumens (in proportion to the thickness of the walls). Traumatic neuroma, the non-neoplastic proliferative mass of Schwann cells and neurites that may develop at the proximal end of a severed or injured nerve. Synonym: amputation neuroma, false neuroma, pseudoneuroma. Verneuil's neuroma, a nodular enlargement of the cutaneous nerves. (05 Mar 2000) |
| optic neuroma | A benign tumour of the optic nerve. (12 Dec 1998) |
