| pityriasis nigra | A fungus infection due to Exophiala werneckii, marked by dark lesions giving a spattered appearance and occurring most commonly on the palms of the hands. Synonym: pityriasis nigra. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|
| cardiopathia nigra | <syndrome> Sclerosis of the pulmonary arteries in chronic cor pulmonale; associated with severe cyanosis, it is a condition resembling polycythemia vera but resulting from primary pulmonary arteriosclerosis or primary pulmonary hypertension and characterised by plexiform lesions of arterioles. Synonym: Ayerza's disease, cardiopathia nigra, plexogenic pulmonary arteriopathy. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| cataracta nigra | A cataract in which the lens is hardened and of a dark brown colour. In the 19th century, German black cataract meant gutta severa (q.v.). Synonym: cataracta brunescens, cataracta nigra. (05 Mar 2000) |
| seborrhoea nigra | A form of seborrhoea characterised by a pigmented secretion. Seborrhoea oleosa, a greasy condition of the skin due to excessive secretion of the sebaceous glands. Synonym: cutis unctuosa, hyperhidrosis oleosa, seborrhoea adiposa. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nigra | In neuroanatomy, the substantia nigra. Origin: L. Fr. Niger, black (05 Mar 2000) |
| substantia nigra | A large cell mass, crescentic on transverse section, extending forward over the dorsal surface of the crus cerebri from the rostral border of the pons into the subthalamic region; it is composed of a dorsal stratum of closely spaced pigmented (i.e., melanin-containing) cells, the pars compacta, and a larger ventral region of widely scattered cells, the pars reticulata; the pars compacta in particular includes numerous cells that project forward to the striatum (caudate nucleus and putamen) and contain dopamine, which acts as the transmitter substance at their synaptic endings; other, apparently non-dopaminergic cells of the substantia nigra project to a rostral part of the ventral nucleus of thalmus, the middle layers of the superior colliculus and to restricted parts of the reticular formation of the midbrain; the nigrostriatal projection is reciprocated by a massive striatonigral fibre system with multiple neurotransmitters, chief among which is gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA); substantia n. Receives smaller afferent projections from the subthalamic nucleus, the lateral segment of the globus pallidus, the dorsal nucleus of the raphe and the pedunculopontine nucleus of the midbrain. The pars reticulata forms part of the output system for the striate body. The substantia n. Is involved in the metabolic disturbances associated with Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease. Synonym: locus niger, nucleus niger, Soemmerring's ganglion. (05 Mar 2000) |
| dermatosis papulosa nigra | Dark brown papular lesions, observed in blacks, on the face and upper trunk; histologically and clinically, they resemble seborrheic keratoses. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tinea nigra | A fungus infection due to Exophiala werneckii, marked by dark lesions giving a spattered appearance and occurring most commonly on the palms of the hands. Synonym: pityriasis nigra. (05 Mar 2000) |
| linea nigra | The linea alba in pregnancy, which then becomes pigmented. Synonym: black line. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lingua nigra | In canines, a disorder associated with a deficency of nicotinic acid. Black to yellowish brown discoloration of the dorsum of the tongue due to staining by exogenous material such as the components of tobacco; usually superimposed on hairy tongue. Synonym: lingua nigra, melanoglossia, nigrities linguae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| pityriasis | <dermatology> A name originally applied to a group of skin diseases characterised by the formation of fine, branny scales, but now used only with a modifier. Origin: Gr. Pityron = bran (18 Nov 1997) |
| pityriasis amiantacea | An inflammatory condition of the scalp in which heavy scales extend onto the hairs and bind the proximal portions together; it is not caused by a fungus. Synonym: pityriasis amiantacea. (05 Mar 2000) |
| pityriasis capitis | <dermatology> Dried skin that flakes free from the scalp. (27 Sep 1997) |
| pityriasis circinata | A mild exanthematous inflammation of unknown aetiology. It is characterised by the presence of salmon-coloured maculopapular lesions. The most striking feature is the arrangement of the lesions such that the long axis is parallel to the lines of cleavage. The eruptions are usually generalised, affecting chiefly the trunk, and the course is often self-limiting. (12 Dec 1998) |
| pityriasis lichenoides | A subgroup of parapsoriasis itself divided into acute and chronic forms. The acute form is characterised by the abrupt onset of a generalised, reddish-brown, maculopapular eruption. Lesions may be vesicular, haemorrhagic, crusted, or necrotic. Histologically the disease is characterised by epidermal necrolysis. The chronic form shows milder skin changes with necrosis. An important variant of the chronic form is lymphomatoid papulosis. (12 Dec 1998) |
| pityriasis lichenoides chronica | An eruption lasting up to a few years, of reddish-brown papules with central scaling, that clears without scarring. Origin: Lichenoides Mod. L., fr. G. Leichen, lichen, a lichen-like eruption, + eidos, resemblance chronica Mod. L. Chronic, fr. G. Chronikos, pertaining to time; fr. Chronos, time (05 Mar 2000) |
