||
||
![]() ![]() ![]() |

| pituitary gonadotropic hormone | Any gonadotropin of hypophysial origin; formerly used to designate a single hormone, because it was thought that the anterior hypophysis secreted only one gonadotropin. Synonym: pituitary gonadotropic hormone. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|
| gonadotropic hormone | <endocrinology, hormone> A hormone capable of promoting gonadal growth and function. The effects are usually limited to discrete functions or histological components of a gonad, such as stimulation of follicular growth or of androgen formation. Most gonadotrophin's exert their effects in both sexes, although the effect of a given gonadotrophin will differ in males and females. Synonym: gonadotropin, gonadotropic hormone. Origin: for gonadotrophin, fr. Gonad + G. Trophe, nourishment (12 Sep 2002) |
|---|---|
| receptors, pituitary hormone-regulating hormone | Cell surface receptors that bind the hypothalamic hormones regulating pituitary cell differentiation, proliferation, and hormone synthesis and release, including the pituitary-releasing and release-inhibiting hormones. The pituitary hormone-regulating hormones are also released by cells other than hypothalamic neurons, and their receptors also occur on non-pituitary cells, especially brain neurons, where their role is less well understood. Receptors for dopamine, which is a prolactin release-inhibiting hormone as well as a common neurotransmitter, are not included here. (12 Dec 1998) |
| gonadotropic | 1. Descriptive of or relating to the actions of a gonadotropin. 2. Promoting the growth and/or function of the gonads. Synonym: gonadotrophic. Origin: Gonado-+ G. Trope, a turning (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterior pituitary-like hormone | A glycoprotein with a carbohydrate fraction composed of d-galactose and hexosamine, extracted from the urine of pregnant women and produced by the placental trophoblastic cells; its most important role appears to be stimulation, during the first trimester, of ovarian secretion of the oestrogen and progesterone required for the integrity of conceptus; it appears to play no significant role in the last two trimesters of pregnancy, as the oestrogen and progesterone are then formed by the placenta. Synonym: anterior pituitary-like hormone, choriogonadotropin, chorionic gonadotropic hormone, chorionic gonadotrophic hormone, placenta gonadotropin, placentagonadotropin. (05 Mar 2000) |
| receptors, pituitary hormone | Cell surface proteins that bind pituitary hormones with high affinity and trigger intracellular changes influencing the behaviour of cells. Since many pituitary hormones are also released by neurons as neurotransmitters, these receptors are also found in the nervous system. (12 Dec 1998) |
| pituitary growth hormone | <protein> Hormone (191 amino acids) released by anterior pituitary that stimulates release of somatomedin, thereby causing growth. (18 Nov 1997) |
| pituitary hormone release inhibiting hormones | Polypeptide hormones produced in the hypothalamus which inhibit the release of pituitary hormones. (12 Dec 1998) |
| pituitary hormone-releasing hormones | Hormones released by one structure (e.g., the hypothalamus or the thyroid gland) that effect the secretion of hormones from the pituitary gland. (12 Dec 1998) |
| growth hormone inhibiting hormone | <protein> Gastrointestinal and hypothalmic peptide hormone (two forms: 14 and 28 residues), found in gastric mucosa, pancreatic islets, nerves of the gastrointestinal tract, in posterior pituitary and in the central nervous system. Inhibits gastric secretion and motility: in hypothalamus/pituitary inhibits somatotropin release. (18 Nov 1997) |
| growth hormone-regulating hormone | <endocrinology> Hypothalamic hormones that induce (somatoliberin) or inhibit (somatostatin) the release of growth hormone (somatotropin). (18 Nov 1997) |
