| pinch reflex diode | <radiobiology> A self-insulated ion diode in which the magnetic field from the ion and electron flow alone provide electron control, and the ion source is an anode plasma formed by relexing the electrons through a thin plastic foil. (09 Oct 1997) |
|---|
| applied-b diode | <radiobiology> An ion diode with an applied magnetic field to prevent electrons flowing from cathode to anode. The applied magnetic field also regularizes the electron swarm to reduce beam divergence. (09 Oct 1997) |
|---|---|
| hybrid diode | <radiobiology> An ion diode that uses a field coil in series with the ion diode's accelerating gap to generate sufficient magnetic flux in the diode for electron control. The diode is a combination of the Applied-B diode's ion source and the Ampfion diode's field coil. (09 Oct 1997) |
| ion diode | <radiobiology> Device for producing and accelerating ion beams for light ion drivers for inertial confinement fusion. Ions are produced in an anode plasma, extracted as space-charge-limited ion flow, and accelerated to the cathode, composed of a confined electron swarm, by an applied electric field. Millions of amperes of current at millions of volts have been produced this way. (27 Oct 1998) |
| reversed-field pinch | <radiobiology> A toroidal magnetic confinement scheme which could constitute an alternative to the Tokamak for building a fusion reactor. It is characterised by a magnetic field mostly generated by the plasma itself, with toroidal and poloidal components of comparable intensities, in contrast with the Tokamak where most of the field is toroidal and externally applied. The name of the configuration is given by the fact that the toroidal component of the magnetic field changes sign in the outer region of the plasma. The main attractivness of the Reversed Field Pinch is that, according to presently established scalings, it could reach ignition without the need of auxiliary heating. (09 Oct 1997) |
| pinch graft | Small bits of skin, of partial or full thickness, removed from a healthy area and seeded in a site to be covered. Synonym: Reverdin graft. (05 Mar 2000) |
| screw pinch | <radiobiology> A variant on the theta pinch, in which axial currents (as in a z pinch, but less intense) produce a poloidal magnetic field (in addition to the usual longitudinal field), thus making a corkscrew field configuration. See: theta pinch, z pinch, pinch device. (09 Oct 1997) |
| theta pinch | <radiobiology> A fast-pulsed pinch device in which the external current imposed goes in the azimuthal/circumferential direction (generally in a solenoid) around a cylindrical plasma. Use of a fast-rising solenoidal current causes a rapidly increasing axial magnetic field, which compresses and heats the plasma. Magnetohydrodynamic theory of the Theta Pinch is given in reference 6. (09 Oct 1997) |
| z-pinch | <radiobiology> Pinch device in which the externally-driven pinching current goes in the z direction (parallel to / through the cylindrical plasma). (09 Oct 1997) |
| abdominocardiac reflex | Mechanical stimulation (usually distention) of abdominal viscera causing changes (usually a slowing) in the heart rate or the occurrence of extrasystoles. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Abrams' heart reflex | A contraction of the myocardium when the skin of the precordial region is irritated. (05 Mar 2000) |
| accommodation reflex | Increased convexity of the lens, due to contraction of the ciliary muscle and relaxation of the suspensory ligament, to maintain a distinct retinal image. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Achilles reflex | A contraction of the calf muscles when the tendo calcaneus is sharply struck. Synonym: ankle jerk, ankle reflex, tendo Achillis reflex, triceps surae reflex. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acousticopalpebral reflex | A form of the wink reflex in which there is a contraction, sometimes very slight, of the orbicularis palpebrarum muscle when a sudden noise is made close to the ear; it is absent in labyrinthine disease with total deafness. Synonym: acousticopalpebral reflex, auropalpebral reflex, cochleo-orbicular reflex, startle reflex. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acquired reflex | A reflex that is gradually developed by training and association through the frequent repetition of a definite stimulus. See: conditioning. Synonym: acquired reflex, behaviour reflex, trained reflex. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acromial reflex | Contraction of the biceps muscle caused by a tap on the acromion or the coracoid process. (05 Mar 2000) |
