peroneal phenomenon Tapping the peroneal nerve below the head of the fibula causes dorsiflexion and abduction of the foot.
(05 Mar 2000)
peroneal communicating nerve The peroneal (fibular) communicating branch of the common peroneal (fibular) nerve; it arises from the common peroneal nerve in the popliteal space and passes over the lateral head of the gastrocnemius to the middle third of the leg, where it unites with the medial sural cutaneous nerve to form the sural nerve.
Synonym: ramus communicans fibularis nervi fibularis communis, ramus communicans peroneus nervi peronei communis, nervus communicans fibularis, nervus communicans peroneus, peroneal anastomotic ramus, peroneal communicating nerve.
(05 Mar 2000)
peroneal nerve <anatomy, nerve> The lateral of the two terminal branches of the sciatic nerve. The peroneal (or fibular) nerve provides motor and sensory innervation to parts of the leg and foot.
(12 Dec 1998)
common peroneal nerve <anatomy, nerve> One of the terminal divisions of the sciatic nerve, diverging from the tibial nerve at the upper end of the popliteal fossa, then coursing with the biceps tendon along the lateral portion of the popliteal space to wind around the neck of the fibula where it divides into the superficial and deep peroneal nerves. The common peroneal nerve, or its deep branch, is the most commonly injured nerve, being located in a lateral subcutaneous position at the fibular neck; a lesion causes a loss of ability to dorsiflex the foot ("foot drop").
Synonym: nervus fibularis communis, nervus peroneus communis, common fibular nerve, lateral popliteal nerve.
(05 Mar 2000)
hereditary peroneal nerve dysfunction <neurology> A slowly progressive genetic disorder characterised by muscle atrophy in the feet and the legs, progressing to the hands and arms, due to a disorder involving the destruction of nerves (degeneration of the myelin sheath).
Other features include foot drop and a slapping gait. There is no specific treatment for this disorder.
(27 Sep 1997)
superficial peroneal nerve <anatomy, nerve> A branch of the common peroneal nerve which passes downward in the lateral compartment of the leg to supply the peroneus longus and brevis muscles and terminate as the intermediate and medial dorsal cutaneous nerves supplying the skin of the dorsum of the foot and toes (except for adjacent sides of great and second toes).
Synonym: nervus fibularis superficialis, nervus peroneus superficialis, musculocutaneous nerve of leg, superficial fibular nerve.
(05 Mar 2000)
deep peroneal nerve <anatomy, nerve> One of the terminal branches of the common peroneal nerve, arising at the fibular neck and passing into the anterior compartment of the leg; it supplies the tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus, extensor digitorum longus, and peroneus tertius muscles in the leg, then crosses the ankle joint to supply the muscles on the dorsum of the foot (extensors hallucis and digitorum brevis) becoming cutaneous to innervate adjacent sides of the great and second toes.
Synonym: nervus fibularis profundus, nervus peroneus profundus, anterior tibial nerve, deep fibular nerve.
(05 Mar 2000)
anterior peroneal artery See: perforating branches.
(05 Mar 2000)
retinacula of peroneal muscles Superior and inferior fibrous bands retaining the tendons of the peroneus longus and brevis in position as they cross the lateral side of the ankle.
Synonym: retinacula musculorum peroneorum, retinacula musculorum fibularium, retinacula of peroneal muscles.
(05 Mar 2000)
perforating branch of peroneal artery <anatomy, artery> The branch of the peroneal artery that perforates the interosseous membrane just above the anterior tibiofibular ligament.
Synonym: ramus perforans arteriae fibularis.
(05 Mar 2000)
perforating peroneal artery Arterial branches which penetrate a wall or pass from the anterior to the posterior aspect or compartment of a structure such as the hand or foot to anastomose or be distributed.
Synonym: ramus perforans, perforating peroneal artery.
(05 Mar 2000)
peroneal <anatomy> Of or pertaining to the fibula; in the region of the fibula.
Origin: Gr. The fibula.
Source: Websters Dictionary
(01 Mar 1998)
peroneal anastomotic ramus The peroneal (fibular) communicating branch of the common peroneal (fibular) nerve; it arises from the common peroneal nerve in the popliteal space and passes over the lateral head of the gastrocnemius to the middle third of the leg, where it unites with the medial sural cutaneous nerve to form the sural nerve.
Synonym: ramus communicans fibularis nervi fibularis communis, ramus communicans peroneus nervi peronei communis, nervus communicans fibularis, nervus communicans peroneus, peroneal anastomotic ramus, peroneal communicating nerve.
(05 Mar 2000)
peroneal artery <anatomy, artery> Origin, posterior tibial; distribution, soleus, tibialis posterior, flexor longus hallucis, peroneal muscles, inferior tibiofibular articulation, and ankle joint; anastomoses, anterior lateral malleolar, lateral tarsal, lateral plantar, dorsalis pedis.
Synonym: arteria peronea, arteria fibularis, fibular artery.
(05 Mar 2000)
peroneal bone A long bone in the lower leg that is adjacent to the tibia. The fibula supports approximately 1/6th of the body weight and produces the lateral (outer) prominence of the ankle.
