peptone <physiology> The soluble and diffusible substance or substances into which albuminous portions of the food are transformed by the action of the gastric and pancreatic juices. Peptones are also formed from albuminous matter by the action of boiling water and boiling dilute acids.
Collectively, in a broader sense, all the products resulting from the solution of albuminous matter in either gastric or pancreatic juice. In this case, however, intermediate products (albumose bodies), such as antialbumose, hemialbumose, etc, are mixed with the true peptones. Also termed albuminose.
Pure peptones are of three kinds, amphopeptone, antipeptone, and hemipeptone, and, unlike the albumose bodies, are not precipitated by saturating their solutions with ammonium sulphate.
Origin: Gr. Cooked.

bladder reflex Contraction of the walls of the bladder and relaxation of the trigone and urethral sphincter in response to a rise in pressure within the bladder; the reflex can be voluntarily inhibited and the inhibition readily abolished to control micturition.
Synonym: bladder reflex, urinary reflex, vesical reflex.
(05 Mar 2000)
reflex neurogenic bladder An abnormal condition of bladder function whereby the bladder is cut off from upper motor neuron control, but where the lower motor neuron arc is still intact.

(18 Nov 1997)
crown gall plasmid A plasmid, or type of circular DNA, found in the bacteria Agrobacterium tumefaciens which infects dicot plants. Part of the plasmid inserts itself into the plant genome and causes tumours to form in the roots or in the stems nearest the roots. The plasmid has been used by geneticists, minus the tumour-causing parts, as a vector towards the genetic engineering of plants.
