infestation by intestinal flukes of the family Paramphistomatidae. Most genera are usually found in the stomachs or small intestines of ruminants; genera Gastrodiscoides in Asia and Watsonius in Africa are sometimes found in the duodenum of humans and other animals. Adult worms may be present without any clinical signs, but immature worms cause more severe manifestations such as enteritis, severe diarrhea, anorexia, and hemorrhaging. In flocks of cattle or sheep with heavy infestations, the mortality may be over 90 per cent. Called also amphistomiasis.
