keratoderma, palmoplantar, diffuse An autosomal dominant disorder characterised by a widely distributed, well-demarcated hyperkeratosis of the palms and soles. There is more than one genotypically distinct form, each of which is clinically similar but histologically distinguishable. Diffuse palmoplantar keratoderma is distinct from palmoplantar keratoderma (keratoderma, palmoplantar), as the former exhibits autosomal dominant inheritance and hyperhidrosis is frequently present.
(12 Dec 1998)
palmoplantar keratoderma The occurrence of symmetrical diffuse or patchy areas of hypertrophy of the horny layer of the epidermis on the palms and soles; a group of ectodermal dysplasias of considerable variety, and either autosomal dominant or recessive inheritance.
Synonym: ichthyosis palmaris et plantaris, keratoderma palmaris et plantaris, keratoderma symmetrica, keratoma plantare sulcatum, keratosis palmaris et plantaris, tylosis palmaris et plantaris.
(05 Mar 2000)
keratoderma, palmoplantar Group of mostly hereditary disorders characterised by thickening of the palms and soles as a result of excessive keratin formation leading to hypertrophy of the stratum corneum (hyperkeratosis).
(12 Dec 1998)
mutilating keratoderma Diffuse keratoderma of the extremities, with the development during childhood of constricting fibrous bands around the middle phalanx of the fingers or toes which may lead to spontaneous amputation; autosomal dominant inheritance.
Synonym: keratoma hereditarium mutilans, Vohwinkel syndrome.
(05 Mar 2000)
punctate keratoderma Horny papules over the palms, soles, and digits that develop central plugs; seen commonly in blacks.
Synonym: keratoma disseminatum, keratosis punctata.
(05 Mar 2000)
senile keratoderma <dermatology> A skin lesion that is abnormally sensitive to the effects of ultraviolet light (sunlight). Thought to be a precancerous skin lesion that is more common in the fair-skinned or elderly individual.
Approximately 20% of these skin lesions will develop into squamous cell carcinoma. Prevention includes the use of sun screen agents and the avoidance of drugs (for example tetracyclines) known to cause photosensitivity reactions.
Usually a discreet slightly raised, red or pink lesion located on a sun exposed surface. Texture may appear as rough, gritty or scaly. Growths may be biopsied to look for cancer or removed via cryotherapy or electrical cautery. Some topical agents may be used to promote peeling.
(27 Sep 1997)
keratoderma 1. Any horny superficial growth.
2. A generalised thickening of the horny layer of the epidermis.
Origin: kerato-+ G. Derma, skin
(05 Mar 2000)
keratoderma blennorrhagica Pustules and crusts associated with Reiter's syndrome.
Synonym: keratoderma blennorrhagica.
(05 Mar 2000)
keratoderma blennorrhagicum The scattered, thickened, hyperkeratotic skin lesions seen in Reiter's syndrome.
(05 Mar 2000)
keratoderma eccentrica A rare, chronic, progressive autosomal dominant disorder seen most often in males and usually appearing in early childhood. It is characterised by the formation of slightly atrophic patches surrounded by an elevated, keratotic border.
(12 Dec 1998)
keratoderma palmaris et plantaris The occurrence of symmetrical diffuse or patchy areas of hypertrophy of the horny layer of the epidermis on the palms and soles; a group of ectodermal dysplasias of considerable variety, and either autosomal dominant or recessive inheritance.
Synonym: ichthyosis palmaris et plantaris, keratoderma palmaris et plantaris, keratoderma symmetrica, keratoma plantare sulcatum, keratosis palmaris et plantaris, tylosis palmaris et plantaris.
(05 Mar 2000)
keratoderma plantare sulcatum Hyperkeratosis and fissure formation on the soles.
Synonym: cracked heel.
(05 Mar 2000)
keratoderma symmetrica The occurrence of symmetrical diffuse or patchy areas of hypertrophy of the horny layer of the epidermis on the palms and soles; a group of ectodermal dysplasias of considerable variety, and either autosomal dominant or recessive inheritance.
Synonym: ichthyosis palmaris et plantaris, keratoderma palmaris et plantaris, keratoderma symmetrica, keratoma plantare sulcatum, keratosis palmaris et plantaris, tylosis palmaris et plantaris.
(05 Mar 2000)
lymphedematous keratoderma A profuse velvety papillomatous growth that develops large warty projections; caused by chronic lymphedema and stasis with maceration and associated infection.
Synonym: lymphedematous keratoderma, lymphostatic verrucosis.
(05 Mar 2000)
cerebral sclerosis, diffuse Diffuse progressive degeneration of the white matter of the brain, accompanied by mental deterioration, severe motor disturbances, and early death.
