adrenergic uptake inhibitors Drugs that block the transport of adrenergic transmitters into axon terminals or into storage vesicles within terminals. The tricyclic antidepressants (antidepressive agents, tricyclic) and amphetamines are among the therapeutically important drugs that may act via inhibition of adrenergic transport. Many of these drugs also block transport of serotonin.
(12 Dec 1998)
Amine Precursor Uptake and Decarboxylation <pharmacology, physiology> Paracrine cells of which argentaffin cells are an example. Usage of the term APUD is neither helpful nor memorable.
Acronym: APUD
(11 Nov 1997)
gallium uptake with normal chest film <radiology> Pulmonary drug toxicity, tumour infiltration, sarcoidosis, pneumocystis carinii see: lung: gallium imaging
(12 Dec 1998)
radioactive iodide uptake test A test of thyroid function in which 131I-iodide is given orally; after 24 hours, the amount present in the thyroid gland is measured and compared with normal values.
Synonym: radioactive iodide uptake test, RAI test.
(05 Mar 2000)
serotonin uptake inhibitors Compounds that specifically inhibit the reuptake of serotonin in the brain. This increases the serotonin concentration in the synaptic cleft which then activates serotonin receptors to a greater extent. These agents have been used in treatment of depression, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive behaviour, and alcoholism, as analgesics, and to treat obesity and bulimia. Many of the adrenergic uptake inhibitors also inhibit serotonin uptake; they are not included here.
(12 Dec 1998)
neurotransmitter uptake inhibitors Drugs that inhibit the transport of neurotransmitters into axon terminals or into storage vesicles within terminals. For many transmitters, uptake determines the time course of transmitter action so inhibiting uptake prolongs the activity of the transmitter. Blocking uptake may also deplete available transmitter stores. Many clinically important drugs are uptake inhibitors although the indirect reactions of the brain rather than the acute block of uptake itself is often responsible for the therapeutic effects.
(12 Dec 1998)
dopamine uptake inhibitors Drugs that block the transport of dopamine into axon terminals or into storage vesicles within terminals. most of the adrenergic uptake inhibitors also inhibit dopamine uptake.
(12 Dec 1998)
iodine uptake test A test of thyroid function in which 131I-iodide is given orally; after 24 hours, the amount present in the thyroid gland is measured and compared with normal values.
Synonym: radioactive iodide uptake test, RAI test.
(05 Mar 2000)
T3 uptake test A test of thyroid function in which triiodothyronine (T3) is added to a patient's serum in vitro to measure the relative affinities of serum proteins and of an added competitive substance for T3; higher T3 uptakes are associated with hyperthyroidism.
Synonym: T3 uptake test.
(05 Mar 2000)
triiodothyronine uptake test A test of thyroid function in which triiodothyronine (T3) is added to a patient's serum in vitro to measure the relative affinities of serum proteins and of an added competitive substance for T3; higher T3 uptakes are associated with hyperthyroidism.
Synonym: T3 uptake test.
(05 Mar 2000)
uptake The absorption by a tissue of some substance, food material, mineral, etc. And its permanent or temporary retention.
(05 Mar 2000)
uptake hydrogenase <enzyme> Isolated from heterocysts of aerobically grown anabena filaments; also from rhodobacter capsulatus; belongs to the class of nife hydrogenases; allows the cell to grow autographically with h(2) as the electron source; isolated as a heterodimer comprising a small and large subunit; has been sequenced
Registry number: EC 1.12.-
Synonym: h2-oxidizing(uptake) hydrogenase, hydrogenase II, h2-uptake hydrogenase
(26 Jun 1999)
alactic oxygen debt That part of the oxygen debt that is not lactacid oxygen debt; during recovery, stores of ATP and creatine phosphate must be replenished by oxidative metabolism, and a small amount of oxygen is also needed to restore the normal oxyhemoglobin levels throughout the circulating blood.
(05 Mar 2000)
alveolar-arterial oxygen difference The difference or gradient between the partial pressure of oxygen in the alveolar spaces and the arterial blood: P(A-a)02. Normally in young adults this value is less than 20 mm Hg.
See: alveolar gas equation.
(05 Mar 2000)
arteriovenous oxygen difference <physiology> The difference in the oxygen content (in ml per 100 ml blood) between arterial and venous blood.
