a cardiac glycoside consisting of a molecule of rhamnose linked to a steroid nucleus, obtained principally from the seeds of Strophanthus gratus (Wall & Hock.) Baill. (Apocynaceae), having the same actions as digitalis but producing digitalization more rapidly; used in the emergency treatment of acute congestive heart failure, administered intravenously. Called also G-strophanthin or strophanthin-G.
