| ophthalmoplegia totalis | Paralysis of both the extrinsic and intrinsic ocular muscles. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|
| alopecia totalis | Total loss of hair of the scalp either within a very short period of time or from progression of localised alopecia, especially alopecia areata. Compare: alopecia universalis. Synonym: alopecia capitis totalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| rachischisis totalis | Spina bifida of the entire spinal column. Synonym: araphia, rachischisis totalis. Origin: holo-+ G. Rhachis, spine, + schisis, fissure (05 Mar 2000) |
| hiatus totalis sacralis | Developmental clefting in all sacral vertebrae; may also involve adjacent lumbar vertebrae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| situs inversus totalis | A condition in which there is complete transposition (right to left reversal) of the thoracic and abdominal organs. The heart is not in its usual position in the left chest but is on the right. Specifically related to the heart, this is referred to as dextrocardia (literally, right-hearted). And the stomach, which is normally in the left upper abdomen, is on the right. In patients with situs inversus totalis, all of the chest and abdominal organs are reversed and appear in mirror image when examined or visualised by tests such as X-ray filming. Situs inversus totalis has been estimated to occur once in about 6-8,000 births. Situs inversus occurs in a rare abnormal condition that is present at birth (congenital) called kartagener's syndrome. (12 Dec 1998) |
| Parinaud's ophthalmoplegia | <syndrome> Paralysis of conjugate upward gaze with a lesion at the level of the superior colliculi; Bell's phenomenon is present. Synonym: Parinaud's ophthalmoplegia. (05 Mar 2000) |
| chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia | A specific type of slowly worsening weakness of the ocular muscles, usually associated with a pigmentary retinopathy. See: Kearns-Sayre syndrome, oculopharyngeal dystrophy. Synonym: ocular myopathy. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nuclear ophthalmoplegia | Ophthalmoplegia due to a lesion of the nuclei of origin of the motor nerves of the eye. (05 Mar 2000) |
| internal ophthalmoplegia | Paralysis affecting only the sphincter muscle of the pupil and the ciliary muscle. Synonym: internal ophthalmoplegia. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ophthalmoplegia | Paralysis of the ocular muscles, innervated by the oculomotor, trochlear, and abducens nerves. (12 Dec 1998) |
| ophthalmoplegia, chronic progressive external | One of the mitochondrial encephalomyopathies characterised by slowly progressive paralysis of the extraocular muscles. Muscle biopsies disclose the characteristic ragged red fibres and large numbers of mitochondria with deleted DNA. (12 Dec 1998) |
| ophthalmoplegia externa | Paralysis affecting one or more of the extrinsic eye muscles. Synonym: external ophthalmoplegia. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ophthalmoplegia interna | Paralysis affecting only the sphincter muscle of the pupil and the ciliary muscle. Synonym: internal ophthalmoplegia. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ophthalmoplegia internuclearis | Ophthalmoplegia in lesions of the medial longitudinal fasciculus, with failure of adduction in horizontal gaze but with retention of convergence. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ophthalmoplegia partialis | Incomplete ophthalmoplegia involving only one or two of the extrinsic or intrinsic ocular muscles. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ophthalmoplegia progressiva | Progressive upper bulbar palsy, due to degeneration of the nuclei of the motor nerves of the eye. (05 Mar 2000) |
