| accessory olivary nuclei | See: dorsal accessory olivary nucleus, medial accessory olivary nucleus. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| medial accessory olivary nucleus | A detached part of the olivary nucleus medial to the latter's main body, against the lateral side of the medial lemniscus and pyramidal tract. Synonym: nucleus olivaris accessorius medialis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cerebello-olivary | Relating to the connections of the cerebellum with the inferior olive. (05 Mar 2000) |
| hilum of olivary nucleus | The medially oriented opening in the folded cell layer composing the inferior olivary nucleus through which the efferent fibres of the nucleus make their exit. Synonym: hilum nuclei olivaris. (05 Mar 2000) |
| spino-olivary tract | Multiple spinal tracts terminating in the accessory olivary nuclei. See: olivospinal tract. (05 Mar 2000) |
| superior olivary nucleus | A circumscript, bipartite cell group located ventrolaterally in the lower pontine tegmentum, immediately dorsal to the trapezoid body; the nucleus receives fibres from both the ipsilateral and contralateral cochlear nuclei, and contributes fibres to the lateral (auditory) lemniscus of both sides. It is believed to be prominently involved in the function of spatial localization of sound. Synonym: nucleus dorsalis corporis trapezoidei, oliva superior, superior olivary nucleus, superior olive. (05 Mar 2000) |
| dorsal accessory olivary nucleus | A detached part of the olivary nucleus dorsal to the latter's main body. Synonym: nucleus olivaris accessorius dorsalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| inferior olivary nucleus | A large aggregate of small densely packed nerve cells arranged in folded laminae shaped like a purse with the opening (hilum) directed medially. It corresponds in position to the oliva, projects to all parts of the contralateral half of the cerebellar cortex by way of the olivocerebellar tract, and is the only source of cerebellar climbing fibres. Its afferent connections include fibres from the spinal cord, the dentate nucleus and motor cortex, but its major input appears to be the central tegmental tract originating from multiple nuclei at midbrain levels. Synonym: nucleus olivaris. (05 Mar 2000) |
| olivary | <anatomy> Like an olive. <anatomy> Olivary body, an oval prominence on each side of the medulla oblongata. Synonym: olive. Origin: L. Olivarius belonging to olives, fr. Oliva an olive: cf. F. Olivaire. Source: Websters Dictionary (01 Mar 1998) |
| olivary body | <zoology> A genus of polished marine gastropod shells, chiefly tropical, and often beautifully coloured. Origin: L. An olive. Source: Websters Dictionary (01 Mar 1998) |
| olivary eminence | <zoology> A genus of polished marine gastropod shells, chiefly tropical, and often beautifully coloured. Origin: L. An olive. Source: Websters Dictionary (01 Mar 1998) |
| aberrant complex | An anomalous electrocardiographic complex, more specifically an abnormal ventricular complex caused by abnormal intraventricular conduction of a supraventricular impulse. (05 Mar 2000) |
| activated complex | <chemistry> State of highest energy during a reaction. When reactants form the activated complex, bond breaking and bond formation is occurring. Synonym: transition state. (09 Jan 1998) |
| AIDS dementia complex | <immunology> A frequent cerebral condition in people with AIDS that results in the loss of cognitive capacity, affecting the ability to function in a social or occupational setting. Its cause has not been determined exactly, but may result from HIV infection of cells in the brain or an inflammatory reaction to such infection. (09 Oct 1997) |
| aids-related complex | A prodromal phase of infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Laboratory criteria separating aids-related complex (arc) from aids include elevated or hyperactive B-cell humoral immune responses, compared to depressed or normal antibody reactivity in aids; follicular or mixed hyperplasia in arc lymph nodes, leading to lymphocyte degeneration and depletion more typical of aids; evolving succession of histopathological lesions such as localization of kaposi's sarcoma, signaling the transition to the full-blown aids.
