brachium of inferior colliculus A fibre bundle passing from the inferior colliculus on either side of the brainstem along the lateral border of the superior colliculus to the posterior part of the thalamus where it enters the medial geniculate body. It forms part of the major ascending auditory pathway.
Synonym: brachium colliculi inferioris, brachium quadrigeminum inferius, inferior quadrigeminal brachium.
(05 Mar 2000)
colliculus inferior The ovoid, paired, inferior eminence of the laminae of mesencephalic tectum; it receives the lateral lemniscus and projects by way of the brachium of inferior colliculus to the medial geniculate body of the thalamus, and is thus an essential way-station in the central auditory pathway.
Synonym: colliculus inferior, corpus quadrigeminum posterius, inferior nasal colliculus, posterior quadrigeminal body.
(05 Mar 2000)
nucleus of inferior colliculus The nerve cell groups composing the colliculus inferior.
Synonym: nucleus colliculi inferioris.
(05 Mar 2000)
inferior colliculus The ovoid, paired, inferior eminence of the laminae of mesencephalic tectum; it receives the lateral lemniscus and projects by way of the brachium of inferior colliculus to the medial geniculate body of the thalamus, and is thus an essential way-station in the central auditory pathway.
Synonym: colliculus inferior, corpus quadrigeminum posterius, inferior nasal colliculus, posterior quadrigeminal body.
(05 Mar 2000)
inferior nasal colliculus The ovoid, paired, inferior eminence of the laminae of mesencephalic tectum; it receives the lateral lemniscus and projects by way of the brachium of inferior colliculus to the medial geniculate body of the thalamus, and is thus an essential way-station in the central auditory pathway.
Synonym: colliculus inferior, corpus quadrigeminum posterius, inferior nasal colliculus, posterior quadrigeminal body.
(05 Mar 2000)
brachium of superior colliculus A band of fibres of the optic tract bypassing the lateral geniculate body to terminate in the superior colliculus and pretectal region.
Synonym: brachium colliculi superioris, brachium quadrigeminum superius, superior quadrigeminal brachium.
(05 Mar 2000)
gray layer of superior colliculus Term applied to any one of the three major layers of gray matter of the superior colliculus that alternate with layers composed chiefly of nerve fibres: 1) the superficial gray layer of superior colliculus, above the largely white layer of the incoming fibres of the optic tract (optic layer); 2) the middle gray layer of superior colliculus, placed between the optic layer and a more deeply located layer of fibres, the stratum lemnisci; 3) the deep gray layer of superior colliculus, between the stratum lemnisci and the central gray substance surrounding the cerebral aqueduct, and containing the large nerve cells from which most of the colliculus descending connections (tectobulbar, tectopontine, and tectospinal tract) originate.
Synonym: stratum griseum colliculi superioris, stratum cinereum colliculi superioris.
(05 Mar 2000)
middle gray layer of superior colliculus See: gray layer of superior colliculus.
Molecular layer, term applied to any layer of brain tissue that contains few nerve-cell bodies and is composed largely of terminal arborizations of dendrites and axons; notable examples are the superficial layer (first layer) of the cerebral cortex and the molecular layer of cerebellum.
Synonym: plexiform layer, stratum moleculare.
(05 Mar 2000)
colliculus A small elevation above the surrounding parts.
Origin: L. Mound, dim. Of collis, hill
(05 Mar 2000)
colliculus cartilaginis arytenoideae The elevation on the anterolateral surface of the arytenoid cartilage above the triangular fovea.
Synonym: colliculus cartilaginis arytenoideae.
(05 Mar 2000)
colliculus facialis Prominent portion of the medial eminence, just rostral to the medullary striae in the rhomboidal fossa; it is formed by the internal genu of the facial nerve and the abducens nucleus around which the facial fibres curve.
Synonym: colliculus facialis, abducens eminence, eminentia abducentis, eminentia facialis, facial eminence, facial hillock.
(05 Mar 2000)
colliculus of arytenoid cartilage The elevation on the anterolateral surface of the arytenoid cartilage above the triangular fovea.
Synonym: colliculus cartilaginis arytenoideae.
(05 Mar 2000)
colliculus seminalis An elevated portion of the urethral crest upon which open the two ejaculatory ducts and the prostatic utricle.
Synonym: colliculus seminalis, caput gallinaginis, colliculus urethralis, seminal hillock, verumontanum.
(05 Mar 2000)
colliculus superior The paired, larger, rounded anterior eminence of the laminae of mesencephalic tectum; major afferent connections of the superficial layers are the retina and striate cortex; input to deep layers of the colliculus are polymodal. Its efferent connections are with the lower brainstem and spinal cord (tectobulbar tract and tectospinal tract) and with the pulvinar and other cell groups in the caudal part of the thalamus; participates in extrageniculate visual pathway.
Synonym: colliculus superior, anterior quadrigeminal body, corpus quadrigeminum anterius.
(05 Mar 2000)
colliculus urethralis An elevated portion of the urethral crest upon which open the two ejaculatory ducts and the prostatic utricle.
Synonym: colliculus seminalis, caput gallinaginis, colliculus urethralis, seminal hillock, verumontanum.
