| nodular hyperplasia of prostate | Glandular and stromal hyperplasia occurring very commonly in the middle and lateral lobes of older men, forming nodules that may increasingly obstruct the urethra. Synonym: benign prostatic hypertrophy. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| nodular regenerative hyperplasia | A rare condition in which nodules of hyperplastic hepatocytes develop without fibrosis or general loss of lobular architecture. Synonym: nodular regenerative hyperplasia. (05 Mar 2000) |
| focal nodular hyperplasia | <radiology> Focal nodules of normal hepatocytes, Kuppfer cells and bile ducts, F more than M, rare, benign, multiple in 20%, haemorrhage (most common complication) in only 2-3% (unlike hepatic adenoma), stellate fibrous septae (stellate scar), NM: normal or increased uptake on HIDA and sulfur colloid (12 Dec 1998) |
| adrenal hyperplasia | <pathology> A condition of diffuse enlargement of the adrenal glands. Origin: Gr. Plassein = to form (27 Sep 1997) |
| adrenal hyperplasia, congenital | A group of inherited disorders of adrenal steroidogenesis, the physical expression of which varies with the sex of the patient, the severity of the congenital enzyme defect, and the age at which the defect makes its presence felt. The most common form, the simple virilizing form, is due to a 21-hydroxylase deficiency. There is also a salt-losing form (a more complete 21-hydroxylase deficiency), a hypertensive form (11-hydroxylase deficiency), a 17-hydroxylase deficiency form, a desmolase deficiency form, and a 3-beta-hydroxysteroid deficiency form. (12 Dec 1998) |
| congenital adrenal hyperplasia | <endocrinology> A genetic disorder present at birth characterised by a deficiency of the hormones aldosterone and cortisol and an overproduction of male sex hormones (androgens). In males this may manifest as enlarged penis, small testes and early development of masculine characteristics. In females features include ambiguous genitalia, failure to menstruate, deep voice and excessive hair. Origin: Gr. Plassein = to form (27 Sep 1997) |
| congenital virilizing adrenal hyperplasia | A series of inherited inborn errors of metabolism with hyperplasia of the adrenal cortex and overproduction of virilizing hormones. Most common forms are due to partial or complete 21-hydroxylase deficiency, leading to increased ACTH production by the pituitary, stimulating adrenal growth and function. Severe form is characterised by salt-losing state. (05 Mar 2000) |
| calcific nodular aortic stenosis | Most common type of aortic stenosis, occurring usually in elderly men, in which the cusps contain calcified fibrous nodules on both surfaces; the causes include rheumatic fever, atherosclerosis, age-related degeneration, and congenitally bicuspid aortic valve. (05 Mar 2000) |
| panniculitis, nodular nonsuppurative | A form of panniculitis characterised by recurrent episodes of fever accompanied by the eruption of single or multiple erythematous subcutaneous nodules on the lower extremities. They normally resolve, but tend to leave depressions in the skin. The condition is most often seen in women, alone or in association with other disorders. (12 Dec 1998) |
| goiter, nodular | An enlarged thyroid gland containing circumscribed nodules within its substance. (12 Dec 1998) |
| Salzmann's nodular corneal degeneration | Large and prominent nodules of a solid, opaque material that stands out from the surface of the cornea; occurs occasionally in persons previously affected by phlyctenular keratitis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nodular | Bumpy. (12 Dec 1998) |
| nodular amyloidosis | A localised form of amyloidosis in which amyloid occurs as masses or nodules beneath the skin or mucous membranes, e.g., in the larynx. Synonym: amyloid tumour, focal amyloidosis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nodular arteriosclerosis | Atheromas occurring in the arterial intima as discrete tumours. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nodular body | In fungi, a compact, roughly spherical or squarish structure formed by coiling and twisting of the end of a hypha; considered to be abortive growths toward sexual reproduction. (05 Mar 2000) |
