| 설명 | 분만 직후부터 독립된 자궁의 생활을 할 수 있는 능력을 획득할 때까지의 아이. 신생아는 생후 4주일까지를 말한다. 이 기간에 신생아는 모체의 태 안에서 자동적으로 산소나 영양을 받고 있던 상태에서 자력으로 호흡이나 영양 섭취를 하게 되는 급격한 변화가 일어나고, 이에 따라서 초기의 체온의 강하, 생리적 체중의 감소, 신생아황달, 탯줄의 탈락 등의 여러 현상이 일어난다. 감각면에서는 영양 섭취를 위한 흡인반사는 잘 발달되어 있으나, 미각은 대강의 맛의 판별, 후각은 강한 악취에 대한 반응, 시각은 명암을 판별하는 정도이며, 청각은 생후 1주일경까지는 거의 반응을 나타내지 않는다. |

| 설명 | 신생아에서 적혈구가 비정상적으로 많이 파괴되는 병으로 태아적모구증(erythroblastosis fetalis)와 같은 뜻으로 쓰인다. 이것은 어머니에게서 생산된 신생아나 태아의 적혈구에 대한 항체가 태반을 건너와서 태아의 적혈구와 결합하여서 생기는 용혈성빈혈을 이르는 말. 즉 신생아나 태아의 적혈구의 항체가 어머니의 몸에서 생산이 되고 이것이 태반을 통해서 태아에게 넘어가서 태아의 적혈구와 결합을 하고 이 항체와 결합한 적혈구는 파괴가 되어서 빈혈이 생긴 것을 태아적모구증이라고 한다. 이것은 Rh 적모구증(Rh erythroblastosis)와 ABO 적모구증(ABO erythroblastosis)로 나눌 수가 있다. |

A public health screening program to screen newborns for the presence of certain metabolic or genetic conditions. Screening is done within days of birth to identify infants at increased risk for a specific genetic or endocrine disorder so that treatment can begin as soon as possible: when a newborn screening result is "out-of-the-expected range", further diagnostic testing is usually required to confirm or specify the results.
