| brain-derived neurotrophic factor | <growth factor> Small basic protein purified from pig brain, a member of the family of neurotrophic factors that also includes Nerve Growth Factor and neurotrophin 3. In contrast to nerve growth factor, brain-derived neurotrophic factor is predominanantly (though not exclusively) localised in the CNS. It supports the survival of primary sensory neurons originating from the neural crest and ectodermal placodes that are not responsive to NGF. In the brain brain-derived neurotrophic factor has a trophic action on retinal, cholinergic, and dopaminergic neurons, and in the peripheral nervous system it acts on both motor and sensory neurons. Acronym: BDGF (12 Dec 1998) |

| ciliary neurotrophic factor | <growth factor> Neurotrophic factor originally characterised as a survival factor for chick ciliary neurons in vitro. Subsequently shown to promote the survival of a variety of other neuronal cell types and to promote the differentiation of bipotential O2A progenitor cells to type 2 astrocytes in vitro. Molecular cloning and expression studies indicate that CNTF is a cytosolic protein. Developmental expression and regional distribution studies show that, unlike NGF, CNTF is not a target derived neurotrophic factor. (18 Nov 1997) |
| neurotrophic | Involved in the nutrition (or maintenance) of neural tissue. Classic example is nerve growth factor. (18 Nov 1997) |
| neurotrophic atrophy | Abnormalities of the skin, hair, nails, subcutaneous tissues and bone, caused by peripheral nerve lesions. Synonym: neuritic atrophy, neurogenic atrophy, neurotrophic atrophy, trophic changes. (05 Mar 2000) |
| neurotrophic factor | A molecule, usually a protein, that will facilitate the growth or repair of nerve cells. (14 Nov 1997) |
| neurotrophic keratitis | Inflammation of the cornea after corneal anaesthesia. Synonym: neuroparalytic keratitis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arthropathy | <rheumatology> Any disease that affects joints. Origin: Gr. Pathos = disease (11 Nov 1997) |
| arthropathy, neurogenic | Chronic progressive degeneration of the stress-bearing portion of a joint, with bizarre hypertrophic changes at the periphery. It is probably a complication of a variety of neurologic disorders, particularly tabes dorsalis, involving loss of sensation, which leads to relaxation of supporting structures and chronic instability of the joint. (12 Dec 1998) |
| static arthropathy | Secondary involvement of a joint following disease in a joint of the same extremity; e.g., knee or ankle involvement in hip disease. (05 Mar 2000) |
| neuropathic arthropathy | <radiology> M more than F, age more than 40 yrs, 6 D's, destruction, increased density, dislocation, debris, distension, disorganization, diabetic neuropathy, syphilis (tabes dorsalis), syrinx, meningomyelocele / spina bifida, nerve injury: spinal cord or peripheral nerves, congenital insensitivity to pain, leprosy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth syndrome (12 Dec 1998) |
| diabetic arthropathy | A neuropathic arthropathy occurring in diabetes. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tabetic arthropathy | A neuropathic arthropathy that occurs with tabes dorsalis (tabetic neurosyphilis). See: neuropathic joint. Synonym: Charcot's joint. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Jaccoud's arthropathy | A rare form of chronic arthritis, reported to occur after attacks of acute rheumatic fever, characterised by an unusual form of bone erosion of the metacarpal heads and by ulnar deviation of the fingers; it resembles rheumatoid arthritis, but with less overt inflammation, and rheumatoid factor is absent. Synonym: Jaccoud's arthropathy. (05 Mar 2000) |
| long-leg arthropathy | A degenerative joint disease that develops, after many years, in the knee of the longer leg of a person with unequal leg lengths. (05 Mar 2000) |
