| neurofibra |
pl. neurofi´brae [L.] [TA] nerve fiber or neurofiber: a slender process of a neuron; the term is often synonymous with axon. Nerve fibers are classified on the basis of the presence or absence of a myelin sheath as myelinated or unmyelinated. In the terminology for types of nerve fibers, the word nerve is frequently dropped; e.g., myelinated f's, unmyelinated f's, etc. For bundles or tracts of nerve fibers, see under bundle, fasciculus, lemniscus, tract, and tractus. Called also fiber and fibra.
