| narrow | 1. Of little breadth; not wide or broad; having little distance from side to side; as, a narrow board; a narrow street; a narrow hem. "Hath passed in safety through the narrow seas." (Shak) 2. Of little extent; very limited; circumscribed. "The Jews were but a small nation, and confined to a narrow compass in the world." (Bp. Wilkins) 3. Having but a little margin; having barely sufficient space, time, or number, etc.; close; near; with special reference to some peril or misfortune; as, a narrow shot; a narrow escape; a narrow majority. 4. Limited as to means; straitened; pinching; as, narrow circumstances. 5. Contracted; of limited scope; illiberal; bigoted; as, a narrow mind; narrow views. "A narrow understanding." 6. Parsimonious; niggardly; covetous; selfish. "A very narrow and stinted charity." (Smalridge) 7. Scrutinizing in detail; close; accurate; exact. "But first with narrow search I must walk round This garden, and no corner leave unspied." (Milton) 8. Formed (as a vowel) by a close position of some part of the tongue in relation to the palate; or (according to Bell) by a tense condition of the pharynx; distinguished from wide; as e (eve) and oo (food), etc, from i (ill) and oo (foot), etc. Narrow is not unfrequently prefixed to words, especially to participles and adjectives, forming compounds of obvious signification; as, narrow-bordered, narrow-brimmed, narrow-breasted, narrow-edged, narrow-faced, narrow-headed, narrow-leaved, narrow-pointed, narrow-souled, narrow-sphered, etc. Narrow gauge. See Note under Gauge. Origin: OE. Narwe, naru, AS. Nearu; akin to OS. Naru, naro. 1. To lessen the breadth of; to contract; to draw into a smaller compass; to reduce the width or extent of. 2. To contract the reach or sphere of; to make less liberal or more selfish; to limit; to confine; to restrict; as, to narrow one's views or knowledge; to narrow a question in discussion. "Our knowledge is much more narrowed if we confine ourselves to our own solitary reasonings." (I. Watts) 3. To contract the size of, as a stocking, by taking two stitches into one. Origin: AS. Nearwian. Source: Websters Dictionary (01 Mar 1998) |

| narrow-angle glaucoma | angle-closure glaucoma |
| absorption band | The range of wavelengths or frequencies in the electromagnetic spectrum where radiant energy is absorbed by passage through a gaseous, liquid, or dissolved substance; it is exploited for analytical purposes in colourimetry or spectrophotometry, and is usually described in terms of the wavelength where maximum absorbance occurs (i.e., lambdamax). | amniotic band syndrome | <syndrome> A disorder present in the newborn infant in which constriction rings or bands, causing soft tissue depressions, encircle digits, extremities, or limbs and sometimes the neck, thorax, or abdomen. They may be associated with intrauterine amputations. (12 Dec 1998) |
| annular band | The strands of amniotic tissue adherent to the embryo or foetus; they may cause constriction of embryonic limbs. See: congenital amputation. Synonym: amniotic adhesions, annular band, constriction ring, Simonart's bands, Simonart's ligaments, Simonart's threads, Streeter's bands. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anogenital band | The first indication of the perineum in the embryo. (05 Mar 2000) |
| atrioventricular band | The bundle of modified cardiac muscle fibres that begins at the atrioventricular node as the trunk of the atrioventricular bundle and passes through the right atrioventricular fibrous ring to the membranous part of the interventricular septum where the trunk divides into two branches, the right crus of the atrioventricular bundle and the left crus of the atrioventricular bundle; the two crura ramify in the subendocardium of their respective ventricles. Synonym: fasciculus atrioventricularis, atrioventricular band, Gaskell's bridge, His' band, His' bundle, bundle of His, Keith's bundle, Kent's bundle, Kent-His bundle, ventriculonector. (05 Mar 2000) |
| A-V band | The bundle of modified cardiac muscle fibres that begins at the atrioventricular node as the trunk of the atrioventricular bundle and passes through the right atrioventricular fibrous ring to the membranous part of the interventricular septum where the trunk divides into two branches, the right crus of the atrioventricular bundle and the left crus of the atrioventricular bundle; the two crura ramify in the subendocardium of their respective ventricles. | band | <genetics> Refers to a narrow portion of a chromosome, which has been darkened by interaction with a dye. Each human chromosome displays a unique pattern of bands and can be identified by its pattern. (14 Nov 1997) |
| band 3 protein | A ubiquitous membrane transport protein found in the plasma membrane of diverse cell types and tissues, and in nuclear, mitochondrial, and golgi membranes. It is the major integral transmembrane protein of the erythrocyte membrane, comprising 25% of the total membrane protein and occurring at 1 million copies per cell. It exists as a dimer and provides a channel for the transport of anions across the membrane. (12 Dec 1998) |
| band cell | <pathology> Immature neutrophils released from the bone marrow reserve in response to acute demand. (18 Nov 1997) |
| band centrifugation | <technique> High-speed centrifugation inwhich molecules float at a point wheretheir density equals that in a gradient of cesium chloride or sucrose. (12 Jan 1998) |
