The leishmania mexicana complex causes both cutaneous (leishmaniasis, cutaneous) and diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis (leishmaniasis, diffuse cutaneous) and includes the subspecies amazonensis, garnhami, mexicana, pifanoi, and venezuelensis.
