mycoplasma hominis A common inhabitant of the vagina and cervix and a potential human pathogen, causing infections of the male and female reproductive tracts. It has also been associated with respiratory disease and pharyngitis.
(12 Dec 1998)

blastocystis hominis A species of parasitic protozoa found in the intestines of humans and other primates. It was classified as a yeast in 1912. Over the years, questions arose about this designation. In 1967, many physiological and morphological b. Hominis characteristics were reported that fit a protozoan classification. Since that time, other papers have corroborated this work and the organism is now recognised as a protozoan parasite of humans causing intestinal disease with potentially disabling symptoms.
(12 Dec 1998)
Gastrodiscoides hominis A species of trematode sometimes found in the intestinal canal of man in India, Southeast Asia, and China; its normal host is the pig.
Synonym: Gastrodiscus hominis.
Origin: Gastro-+ G. Diskos, disk; L. Homo, gen. Hominis, man
(05 Mar 2000)
Gastrodiscus hominis A species of trematode sometimes found in the intestinal canal of man in India, Southeast Asia, and China; its normal host is the pig.
Synonym: Gastrodiscus hominis.
Origin: Gastro-+ G. Diskos, disk; L. Homo, gen. Hominis, man
(05 Mar 2000)
gastrospirillum hominis A species of gram-negative, spiral-shaped bacteria found in the gastric mucosa that is associated with chronic antral gastritis. This bacterium was first discovered in samples removed at endoscopy from patients investigated for helicobacter pylori colonization.
(12 Dec 1998)
poliovirus hominis The picornavirus (genus Enterovirus) causing poliomyelitis in humans; the route of infection is the alimentary tract, but the virus may enter the bloodstream and nervous system, sometimes causing paralysis of the limbs and, rarely, encephalitis; many infections are inapparent; serologic types 1, 2, and 3 are recognised, type 1 being responsible for most paralytic poliomyelitis and most epidemics.
Synonym: poliovirus hominis, poliovirus.
(05 Mar 2000)
polyomavirus hominis 1 <virology> A species of polyomavirus apparently infecting over 90% of children but not clearly associated with any clinical illness in childhood.
The virus remains latent in the body throughout life and can be reactivated under certain circumstances.
(12 Dec 1998)
polyomavirus hominis 2 <virology> A species of polyomavirus, originally isolated from the brain of a patient with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy.
The patient's initials j.c. Gave the virus its name. Infection is not accompanied by any apparent illness but serious demyelinating disease can appear later, probably following reactivation of latent virus.
(12 Dec 1998)
Sarcocystis hominis A species now recognised as a two-host infection, with beef serving as the intermediate host source of infective tissue cysts to humans, as the final host. Gamogony and sporogony occur in mucosal cells of the human small intestine; cattle become infected from human faeces contaminated with Sarcocystis hominis sporocysts.
Synonym: Sarcocystis bovihominis.
(05 Mar 2000)
Staphylococcus hominis Coagulase-negative staphylococcus indigenous to human and mammalian hosts.
(05 Mar 2000)
Dermatobia hominis A large, blue, brown-winged species whose larvae develop in open boil-like lesions in the skin of humans, many domestic animals, and some fowl. It is a very serious and damaging cattle parasite and frequently attacks small children in Central and South America. Its eggs are laid on the legs or abdomen of another insect, such as the mosquito; the eggs later hatch, when stimulated by warmth or other factors, to release the botfly larvae on the skin of the mosquito's bloodmeal host, and the larvae quickly invade the skin to initiate myiasis.
Synonym: Dermatobia cyaniventris, human botfly, skin botflies, warble botfly.
(05 Mar 2000)
Octomitus hominis Pentatrichomonas hominis.
(05 Mar 2000)
Taenia hominis Unusual form of Taenia saginata.
(05 Mar 2000)
Trichomonas hominis Former name for Pentatrichomonas hominis.
(05 Mar 2000)
Trypanosoma hominis A haemoflagellate subspecies of parasitic protozoa that causes gambian or west african sleeping sickness in humans. The vector host is usually the tsetse fly (glossina).
(12 Dec 1998)
pneumonia, mycoplasma Interstitial pneumonia caused by extensive infection of the lungs and bronchi, particularly the lower lobes of the lungs, by mycoplasma pneumoniae.
