| musculus sphincter ani internus | <anatomy> A smooth muscle ring, formed by an increase of the circular fibres of the rectum, situated at the upper end of the anal canal, internal to the outer voluntary external anal sphincter. This sphincter is maximally-contracted when the rectal ampulla is at rest -empty or relaxed to accommodate a distending faecal mass. It is inhibited with filling of the ampulla, increased distension and peristalsis. Synonym: musculus sphincter ani internus, internal sphincter muscle of anus. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|
| musculus sphincter ani externus | A fusiform ring of striated muscular fibres surrounding the anus, attached posteriorly to the coccyx and anteriorly to the central tendon of the perineum; it is subdivided, often indistinctly, into a subcutaneous part, a superficial part and a deep part for descriptive purposes. Synonym: musculus sphincter ani externus, external sphincter muscle of anus. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| sphincter ani tertius | The third sphincter of the anorectum, a physiological sphincter at the sigmoidorectal junction. (05 Mar 2000) |
| musculus corrugator cutis ani | Smooth muscle fibres radiating from the anal opening superficial to the external sphincter. Synonym: musculus corrugator cutis ani. (05 Mar 2000) |
| musculus levator ani | <anatomy> Formed by pubococcygeus and iliococcygeus muscles; origin, posterior body of pubis, tendinous arch of the levator ani, and spine of ischium; insertion, anococcygeal ligament, sides of the lower part of the sacrum and of coccyx; action, resists prolapsing forces and draws the anus upward following defecation; supports the pelvic viscera; nerve supply, nerve to levator ani (fourth sacral spinal nerve). Synonym: musculus levator ani, elevator muscle of anus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| musculus intercostalis internus | <anatomy> Each arises from lower border of rib and passes obliquely downward and backward to be inserted into upper border of rib below; action, contract during expiration, also maintain tension in the intercostal spaces to resist mediolateral movement; nerve supply, intercostal. Synonym: musculus intercostalis internus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| musculus obliquus internus abdominis | <anatomy, muscle> Origin, iliac fascia deep to lateral part of inguinal ligament, anterior half of crest of ilium, and lumbar fascia; insertion, tenth to twelfth ribs and sheath of rectus; some of the fibres from inguinal ligament terminate in the conjoint tendon; action, diminishes capacity of abdomen, flexes lumbar vertebral column (bends thorax forward); nerve supply, lower thoracic. Synonym: musculus obliquus internus abdominis, abdominal internal oblique muscle. (05 Mar 2000) |
| musculus obturator internus | <anatomy, muscle> Origin, pelvic surface of obturator membrane and margin of obturator foramen; insertion, passes out of pelvis through lesser sciatic foramen, in so doing, making a 90 |
| musculus pterygoideus internus | <anatomy, muscle> Origin, pterygoid fossa of sphenoid and tuberosity of maxilla; insertion, medial surface of mandible between angle and mylohyoid groove; action, elevates mandible closing jaw; nerve supply, nerve to medial pterygoid from mandibular division of trigeminal. Synonym: musculus pterygoideus medialis, internal pterygoid muscle, musculus pterygoideus internus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| musculus rectus internus | <anatomy, muscle> Origin, medial part of the anulus tendineus communis; insertion, medial part of sclera of the eye; action, adduction; nerve supply, oculomotor. Synonym: musculus rectus medialis, musculus rectus internus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| musculus thyroarytenoideus internus | <anatomy, muscle> Origin, depression between the two laminae of thyroid cartilage; insertion, portions of vocal process of arytenoid; action, shortens and relaxes vocal cords; nerve supply, recurrent laryngeal; a number of the deeper and finer fibres of the thyroaryteroid muscle attached directly to the outer side of the true vocal cord. Synonym: musculus vocalis, musculus thyroarytenoideus internus, vocal muscle. (05 Mar 2000) |
| musculus vastus internus | <anatomy, muscle> Origin, medial lip of linea aspera; insertion, tibial tuberosity by way of common tendon of quadriceps femoris and ligamentum patellae; action, extends leg; nerve supply, femoral. Synonym: musculus vastus medialis, medial great muscle, medial vastus muscle, musculus vastus internus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arcus tendineus musculi levatoris ani | <anatomy> A thickened portion of the obturator fascia that extends in an arching line from the pubis posteriorly to the ischial spine and gives origin to part of the levator ani muscle. Synonym: arcus tendineus musculi levatoris ani, arcus tendineus of obturator fascia. (05 Mar 2000) |
| pars profunda musculi sphincteri ani externi | pars profunda musculi sphincteri ani externi |
| pars subcutanea musculi sphincteri ani externi | pars subcutanea musculi sphincteri ani externi, subcutaneous portion of external anal sphincter |
| pars superficialis musculi sphincteri ani externi | pars superficialis musculi sphincteri ani externi |
| musculus sphincter ani internus | an internal ring of smooth muscle formed by circular fibers of the rectum |
