| 설명 | 신경축삭을 둘러싸고 있는 말이집(myelin sheath)의 파괴로 인한 병적상태를 말함. 파괴된 말이집은 흉터를 남기게 되어 신경축삭을 통한 신경전달이 제대로 되지 않아 운동, 감각, 자율신경 모두의 신경전달장애가 나타난다. 이 병터는 어디서나 나타날 수 있어서 그 장애가 나타나는 부위에 따라 서로 다른 증상을 호소한다. |

| 설명 | 사람이 근육 하나를 움직일때 사용하는 신경연결을 살펴보면 다음과 같다. 우선 대뇌에 있는 운동을 관장하는 곳인 운동겉질에서의 명령이 떨어지면 이것은 척수를 타고 계속해서 내려오게 된다. 그리고 척수에서 한번 신경세포를 바꾸어서 말초신경 근육에 가서 근육을 움직인다. 즉 대뇌에서 떨어진 명령이 신경세포 하나를 타고 척수까지 가고 척수에서 한 번 신경을 바꾸어 근육으로 간다. 척수에서 시작하여 근육까지 가는 신경 세포를 앞뿔세포라고 한다. 원인 미상인 이 병은 앞뿔세포의 소실에 의해서 그것의 지배를 받는 근육의 위축이 나타나는 것을 주증상으로 한다. 이 병에 특효가 있는 치료법은 아직 없다. |

| 설명 | 다발성 원발성골종양. 머리뼈-갈비뼈-복장뼈-척추뼈-골반 등에 잘 나타나고, 물렁물렁한 종괴를 형성하며, 뼈의 흡수가 일어나고, 40~60세 남자에게 많이 발생한다. 골수종 종양세포는 형질세포에서 유래한 것이어서 형질세포종이라고도 한다. 과거에는 형질세포성골수종 이외에는 다른 골수조혈요소에서 생기는 골수종이라고 생각했지만 현재는 부정되고 있다. 형질세포는 원래 면역글로불린을 생산하는 세포이며, 그것이 종양화한 다발 골수종 환자에서도 대부분 혈청 속에 면역 글로불린이 증가된 것을 볼 수 있다. 증가한 글로불린은 IgG나 IgA인 경우가 많지만 다른 형도 있다. 골수종 환자 약 50%는 오줌에서 벤스죤스단백질이 검출되는데, 이 단백질의 축적에 의해 요세관이 파괴되고, 콩팥경화가 일어난다. 골수종 환자에서는 혈청단백 이상으로 가끔 아밀로이드증이 나타난다. 뼈 X선 소견으로서는 도려낸 병터, 골융해상, 병적골절이 관찰된다. |

| sclerosis, multiple | The National Multiple Sclerosis Society says of ms that it is a disease that randomly attacks your central nervous system, wearing away the control you have over your body. Symptoms may range from numbness to paralysis and blindness. The progress, severity and specific symptoms cannot be foreseen. You never know when attacks will occur, how long they will last, or how severe they will be. most people are diagnosed with ms between the ages of 20 and 40. In medical terms, ms involves demyelinization of the white matter sometimes extending into the gray matter. Demyelinization is loss of myelin, the coating of nerve fibres composed of lipids (fats) and protein that serves as insulation and permits efficient nerve fibre conduction. The white matter is the part of the brain which contains myelinated nerve fibres and appears white, whereas the gray matter is the cortex of the brain which contains nerve cell bodies and appears gray. When myelin is damaged in ms, nerve fibre conduction is faulty or absent. Impaired bodily functions or altered sensations associated with those demyelinated nerve fibres give rise to the symptoms of ms. | Canavan's sclerosis | Autosomal recessive degenerative disease of infancy; mostly in Jewish infants; onset typically within first 3-4 months of birth, consisting of blindness, psychomotor regression, enlarged head, optic atrophy, hypotonia, spasticity, increased N-acetylaspartic acid urinary excretion. MRI shows enlarged brain, decreased attenuation of cerebral and cerebellar white matter, and normal ventricles.
